Amazon is looking for a senior software development leader to help shape a new generation of shopping and search experiences powered by generative AI. The team is working on a conversational assistant that makes shopping feel more natural, helpful, and trustworthy by combining large language models with Amazon’s product catalog and shopping data. The goal is to create an experience that can understand customer needs, answer questions in a back-and-forth conversation, surface useful insights from many sources, and even anticipate what a customer may need next so the shopping journey becomes easier, faster, and more useful.

This role sits within Amazon’s effort to reinvent how customers discover and buy products. The work is not limited to improving existing experiences; it is about building something new that can become a major part of Amazon’s future shopping business. The position brings together technical leadership, product thinking, and collaboration with scientists, economists, engineers, and product managers. It is intended for someone who wants to have a broad impact on customer experience and help define how generative AI is used in commerce at scale.

What you will do

  • Lead and grow a team of software engineers working on sophisticated, customer-facing systems that must operate reliably at scale.
  • Set the technical direction for both new and existing services, making decisions that support long-term reliability, performance, and growth.
  • Guide the design and implementation of multi-layer web services that support Amazon’s shopping and search experiences.
  • Establish and uphold strong engineering practices across the full delivery lifecycle, including coding standards, code review, source control, build and release workflows, testing, certification, and live service operations.
  • Partner closely with product and program management to define requirements, shape delivery plans, and ensure the team is building the right solutions.
  • Work with cross-functional experts, including scientists and economists, to bring new ideas into generative AI shopping experiences.
  • Help develop AI-powered shopping tools that can converse with customers, explain products, provide recommendations, and reduce the effort needed to find the right item.
  • Contribute to the broader strategy for Amazon Rufus and help turn generative AI shopping into a meaningful business pillar for Amazon.
  • Support the creation of systems that are fast, useful, and dependable for customers exploring Amazon’s catalog.
  • Play a senior leadership role in an environment that values innovation, experimentation, and customer obsession.

What Amazon is looking for

  • Proven experience managing a team of strong software engineers building complex, scalable systems that have been delivered successfully to customers.
  • Hands-on experience designing or architecting software systems, including decisions related to design patterns, reliability, and scaling.
  • Experience leading the definition and development of multi-tier web services.
  • Deep understanding of engineering practices and patterns across the full software, hardware, and networking lifecycle.
  • Experience working with product and program management teams to define and deliver software products.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with users, technical teams, and senior leadership in order to gather requirements, explain product features, describe technical designs, and discuss product strategy.
  • Experience recruiting, hiring, mentoring, coaching, and managing software engineering teams so they become more effective and grow in capability.
  • Track record of delivering products on plan in a fast-paced environment with multiple disciplines, shared ownership, and frequent ambiguity.
  • Experience building, deploying, and operating AI products at scale.
  • Comfort operating as a senior technical leader in a highly collaborative, cross-functional setting.

Preferred background

  • Experience communicating with customers, technical partners, and senior leaders to gather needs and explain technical and strategic direction.
  • Experience leading teams through hiring and development, including mentoring and coaching engineers to improve their impact.
  • Experience shipping products in a fast-moving, distributed-responsibility environment where priorities can change quickly.
  • Experience with AI products that are deployed and managed at scale.
