Graphcore is hiring a Linux Engineering Lead to help run and improve the Linux platforms that support its engineering environment in Bristol, UK. The company is building advanced AI compute technology and describes itself as a team of semiconductor, software, and AI specialists working across the full stack, from silicon and software through to datacenter-scale infrastructure. It is part of the SoftBank Group and says it has long-term investment behind it as it expands globally to meet growing demand in AI.
This position is a hands-on technical leadership role. You would guide a small Linux engineering team while also staying directly involved in the technical work at the start of the role. The focus is on improving automation, reliability, and operational discipline across the Linux estate used by Graphcore’s engineering organisation. The role includes leading incident response, driving service improvements, and defining the standards used to manage and support Linux systems across the business. You would work closely with software, platform, and infrastructure teams to keep systems stable, efficient, and aligned with changing product and engineering needs.
What you would do
- Lead and support a small team of Linux engineers, helping them grow technically and operate effectively.
- Take responsibility for the reliability, performance, and scalability of the Linux environments used by engineering teams.
- Encourage wider use of infrastructure-as-code and GitOps approaches in the Linux platform.
- Build automation that reduces repetitive operational work and improves consistency across systems.
- Coordinate major incident response and carry out root cause analysis after incidents.
- Work in partnership with software, platform, and infrastructure colleagues to meet evolving engineering requirements.
- Define and improve standards, tooling, and processes so the platform can scale cleanly and efficiently.
- Increase observability, monitoring, and operational visibility across the Linux estate.
- Help shape the future direction of Linux platform engineering at Graphcore.
- Remain hands-on initially, including troubleshooting, system support, and automation work while the team and processes are being developed.
What Graphcore is looking for
- Deep experience administering Linux systems at scale.
- Strong troubleshooting ability across systems, networking, storage, and applications.
- Experience leading engineers, technical projects, or operational initiatives.
- Good automation and scripting skills, with Python, Bash, or similar tools.
- Practical experience using infrastructure-as-code and configuration management tools such as Ansible, Terraform, or Puppet.
- Experience with Git-based workflows and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience handling production incidents and turning those lessons into operational improvements.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Desirable experience in AI, HPC, or other large-scale engineering environments.
- Desirable experience with observability platforms and monitoring systems.
- Desirable background working with platform engineering, SRE, or DevOps teams.
- Desirable knowledge of identity and access management.
- Desirable experience building or scaling operational processes.
- Applicants are asked to confirm whether they have the legal right to work in the UK as part of the application process.
Team and culture
You would join a multi-disciplinary group with strong technical capability and a supportive working style. The team shares knowledge regularly and says individual contributions have a direct effect on the company’s work. Graphcore describes this as an exciting period with new projects ahead, and says the role is well suited to someone who enjoys solving difficult technical problems and seeing practical results from their work.
Additional information
- Graphcore says it is committed to equal opportunity and to building an inclusive workplace.
- The company states that it welcomes people from different backgrounds and experiences.
- It also says it can offer flexibility during the interview process and encourages candidates to ask about reasonable adjustments if needed.
- Applicants can also sign up for job alerts to receive future opportunities by email.
