Principal Technical Consultants at Softwire are senior consulting professionals who combine strong technical depth with practical experience applying that expertise in a business and industry setting. In this role, you will help clients solve difficult problems, turn technical ideas into real-world outcomes, and contribute to Softwire’s growth in the financial services and insurance market.

About Softwire

Softwire is a major UK digital technology consultancy working across data, AI, cloud, customer experience, innovation, design and software engineering. The company delivers high-profile, mission-critical and transformational work for well-known organisations in both the public and private sectors.

The business was built around the idea of being an exceptional place for talented technologists who want to make a meaningful impact. Its culture is based on doing work properly, finding fulfilment and enjoyment in the job, treating people with kindness, and operating with trust rather than unnecessary bureaucracy. Softwire describes itself as a high-trust environment where skilled, supportive and fun colleagues work together to create services and experiences that solve genuine problems.

The company says it has been recognised as the number one company to work for in the UK at the Best Company awards. It also notes that people who leave Softwire often go on to highly ambitious roles and organisations, including major technology companies, AI research, algorithmic trading and start-up founding.

The role

This position sits across two areas: Softwire’s Technical Capability and its Financial Services & Insurance go-to-market function. The split is roughly even. About half of your time will be spent on client delivery and advisory work, and the other half will be focused on sector expertise, bid shaping, thought leadership and market presence.

On the client side, you will use your technical knowledge and consulting experience to design practical solutions to complex problems and help clients achieve business outcomes. You will be expected to take responsibility for the quality of the solutions delivered, either working independently or overseeing work within your area of expertise as part of a wider team. You will also build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders, use those relationships to strengthen client loyalty, and identify opportunities for further growth.

On the sector and growth side, you will act as Softwire’s financial services and insurance specialist. You will help shape the company’s sector strategy, influence which opportunities the business pursues, and define how those services are packaged and positioned in the market. You will lead the technical development of bids and pitches, including early-stage client conversations, solution shaping and writing technical proposal content. You will also help raise Softwire’s profile through external writing, speaking, panel participation, industry forums and working groups.

The role also includes mentoring junior colleagues and contributing to Softwire’s wider business development efforts, including pre-sales support, brand building and professional networking.

What you will do

  • Design and deliver solutions for difficult client challenges using your technical expertise and consulting judgement.
  • Take accountability for the quality of delivered work, either directly or through oversight of others working in your specialist area.
  • Develop strong, trusted relationships with clients and use those relationships to support loyalty and growth.
  • Coach and mentor junior team members in both technical delivery and consulting practice.
  • Work with Delivery Directors to ensure clients receive a strong service and a positive experience.
  • Spend around half of your time on live client engagements, advising and delivering on active work.
  • Act as the go-to-market subject matter expert for financial services and insurance.
  • Help define which sector problems Softwire should target, how those offers should be structured, and how they should be positioned against competitors.
  • Lead the technical shaping of FS&I bids and proposals, including early client conversations, solution direction and technical proposal writing.
  • Represent Softwire credibly to carriers, brokers, MGAs and Lloyd’s market participants.
  • Build the company’s reputation in the sector through published content, conference and panel appearances, and participation in industry groups.
  • Contribute to internal communities of practice and create thought leadership that is robust enough to stand up to scrutiny from experienced practitioners.
  • Attend events, network externally and grow your own market presence and professional relationships.
  • Support Softwire’s wider growth through pre-sales activity, brand development and business development support.
  • Work collaboratively across the company, sharing information and resources openly and contributing to a strong one-team culture.
  • Take a hands-on, proactive approach to identifying client needs, shaping opportunities and helping turn them into work the client will buy.

What Softwire is looking for

Softwire is seeking someone with substantial technical and consulting experience who can operate credibly with senior stakeholders and contribute meaningfully to both delivery and business development.

  • You should have at least eight years of experience in technical roles, including at least four years in an agency or consultancy environment.
  • You need strong expertise and proven delivery experience in at least one of these areas: data engineering; cloud platform architecture or migration using AWS and/or Azure; digital platform architecture and enterprise modernisation; or AI engineering.
  • You must have worked in or with financial services and be able to discuss the sector confidently from the outset, including its commercial pressures, regulatory environment and operational constraints.
  • Insurance experience is especially desirable, particularly in commercial, specialty or London market insurance.
  • You should understand how carriers, brokers, MGAs and Lloyd’s syndicates operate, including the main challenges in underwriting, pricing, claims and data.
  • You need a strong record of delivering valuable client outcomes through expert technical design and implementation.
  • You should be comfortable operating in ambiguous situations, making decisions without complete information and balancing competing stakeholder priorities.
  • You must be able to turn varied needs and ideas into practical solutions that can gain broad support.
  • You should care about both the technology and the business context, and be ready to advise clients on how technology can help them reach their goals.
  • Softwire would like someone who has already built, or wants to build, a public profile in the sector through writing, speaking, standards work or participation in working groups.
  • You need strong consulting and advisory skills, including the ability to lead, persuade, explain and communicate effectively with people at all levels, including executives.
  • You should be comfortable presenting, have excellent writing skills and know how to shape a compelling message and tell a clear story.
  • You should have a track record of building relationships that can lead to cross-sell and additional opportunities.
  • You need to be proactive about finding further ways to add value for clients and turning those ideas into sellable solutions.
  • You should work well in a collaborative environment, sharing information and treating colleagues as allies.
  • You need to be comfortable in a culture that rewards team success over individual recognition and emphasises collective achievement.
  • You should bring a can-do attitude, be willing to get involved directly and not shy away from difficult issues or opportunities.
  • You should be able to thrive without a perfect environment and take ownership of problems with a positive mindset.
  • You need pre-sales experience in an agency or consultancy setting and a genuine interest in doing more of that work, since around half of the role is focused on go-to-market activity.
  • You should demonstrate leadership, including the ability to inspire others and create the conditions for success across teams and the wider organisation.
