Senior PCB Layout Engineer Overview

Company Name Fractile
Job Role Senior PCB Layout Engineer
Qualifications Bachelor’s
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location Bristol

Fractile is developing silicon, systems, and software intended to push the limits of AI by enabling the most advanced models to run much faster and at much lower cost. The company says it has a strong hardware and software team and is expanding quickly to meet demand and deliver products at scale.

What you will do

  • Design complex PCB layouts for multi-layer boards that combine high-speed digital circuitry with high-power sections.
  • Take responsibility for component placement, routing, and constraint implementation from the initial concept stage through release to manufacturing.
  • Work side by side with hardware engineers to resolve tradeoffs between electrical performance and mechanical constraints.
  • Lay out fast interfaces such as DDR, PCIe, Ethernet, USB, and SerDes links, using controlled impedance, differential pair tuning, length matching, and return-path management.
  • Apply signal-integrity-aware stack-up and routing strategies to reduce crosstalk and signal loss.
  • Design high-current power paths, including VRMs, DC-DC converters, and power planes, with attention to low impedance and current handling.
  • Improve copper distribution, plane structures, and via arrays to support both power delivery and thermal performance.
  • Use copper pours, stitching vias, and heatsink interface planning to help manage heat.
  • Create, check, and maintain schematic symbols, PCB footprints, and 3D models for production hardware.
  • Make sure land patterns align with IPC standards and supplier guidance.
  • Own library quality, version control, naming conventions, and release procedures.
  • Coordinate with engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to keep component data accurate and ready for product use.
  • Continuously improve library standards and supporting documentation.
  • Join schematic reviews, layout reviews, and SI/PI technical discussions.
  • Work with SI/PI engineers to turn simulation results into practical layout constraints.
  • Support DFM and DFA reviews and communicate directly with PCB fabricators and assemblers.
  • Prepare manufacturing outputs such as Gerbers, ODB++, IPC drawings, and pick-and-place data.
  • Help with board bring-up and debugging by applying layout ECOs and fixing layout, footprint, or assembly issues.

What you need

  • A diploma, bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience in electronics, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • More than 7 years of professional PCB layout experience.
  • Proven experience designing high-speed digital and high-power PCBs.
  • Hands-on experience creating and maintaining PCB libraries for production hardware.
  • Ability to work with PCB design tools such as Siemens Xpedition, Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, or similar software.
  • Experience with library creation and management workflows.
  • Strong knowledge of high-speed routing for DDR, PCIe, Ethernet, USB, and SerDes.
  • Experience with high-current layout and power-integrity methods.
  • Understanding of multi-layer PCB stack-ups, with 10+ layers preferred.
  • Excellent attention to detail and disciplined design habits.
  • A strong ownership mindset focused on design quality and library integrity.
  • Good communication skills for working with hardware, mechanical, and manufacturing colleagues.
  • Comfort managing several designs and revisions at once.
  • Helpful additional experience includes SI/PI simulation-informed layout work.
  • Helpful additional experience includes EMI/EMC-aware layout practices.
  • Helpful additional experience includes HDI, fine-pitch BGAs, and advanced PCB technologies.
  • Helpful additional experience includes AI accelerator or HPC hardware.

How the team works

  • The company emphasizes ownership and execution, giving you broad freedom to move work forward.
  • It works in a rapid-iteration style, with direct collaboration with top leadership to move quickly from idea to hardware.
  • Hardware, software, silicon, and modelling teams work closely together in a full-stack environment.
  • The culture is described as optimistic and pragmatic, with a strong focus on doing the hard work needed to win.
  • The team values collaboration and wants the best technical idea to be shipped, regardless of where it comes from.
