Senior Software Engineer – Fintech Overview

Company Name Cloudflare
Job Role Senior Software Engineer – Fintech
Qualifications Not Specified
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location London

Cloudflare is looking for a senior engineer to join its billing and fintech engineering work, helping build the systems that keep usage tracking, subscriptions, invoicing, payments, and revenue recognition accurate at very large scale. The team supports a platform that powers billions in revenue and serves millions of customers, and it is actively rebuilding core parts of the billing stack so it can grow alongside products such as AI, Zero Trust, Workers, Bot Management, and DDoS Protection.

This is a hybrid position. The role is aimed at someone who enjoys solving hard infrastructure problems, taking ownership of complex projects, and improving the reliability of financial systems that must remain correct even under heavy load and failure conditions.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, and operate transactional backend services that support billing-related functions including metering, subscriptions, invoicing, payments, and other financial workflows.
  • Own projects from the earliest requirements and technical design work through implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing production operation.
  • Build systems that can safely handle retries, failures, concurrency, and very high transaction volumes while preserving financial correctness and data integrity.
  • Monitor live services, investigate billing incidents, improve observability, and address the underlying causes of recurring operational issues.
  • Contribute to architecture discussions, review technical designs, and make practical trade-offs that improve the billing platform over time.
  • Work across teams with Product, Finance, Accounting, Support, and other engineers to turn complicated business needs into software that is maintainable and dependable.

What the team is focused on

Cloudflare’s Billing Engineering organization is responsible for the systems behind usage measurement, aggregation, subscriptions, invoicing, payments, and revenue recognition. The work is central to the company’s financial operations and supports a broad product portfolio. As part of the Fintech team, you will help ensure billing remains reliable and accurate as Cloudflare continues to expand.

What they are looking for

  • Five or more years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience building and running backend services or distributed systems in production.
  • Strong coding ability in Go, or another modern programming language, along with interest in working heavily in Go.
  • Good understanding of RESTful APIs, service security, and API standards and technologies such as OpenAPI, OAuth, and JWT.
  • Working knowledge of SQL, relational data modeling, and databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
  • Experience designing secure, highly available microservices in Linux or Unix-based environments.
  • Familiarity with event-driven architectures and asynchronous processing.
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, and project ownership skills.

Helpful additional experience

  • Experience with billing, payments, subscriptions, usage metering, invoicing, financial ledgers, or revenue recognition.
  • Experience with technologies such as PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, or Temporal.
  • Understanding of reconciliation, idempotency, auditability, and the protection of financial data integrity.
  • Experience leading technically complex initiatives across multiple teams.

Interview and application notes

Applicants who advance to the offer stage may be asked to attend an in-person interview at one of Cloudflare’s offices or hubs, with more details provided later in the process.

An optional assignment is available for candidates who want to share a GitHub repository for an AI-powered application project, and Cloudflare says candidates who complete that assignment may be fast-tracked.
