The position is part of Google’s broader ML, Systems, & Cloud AI organization, which is responsible for designing, building, and operating the hardware, software, machine learning, and systems infrastructure behind Google services and Google Cloud. The work supports both internal users and Google Cloud customers, with an emphasis on security, efficiency, reliability, and large-scale impact.

As a staff-level software engineer in this area, you will combine deep technical expertise with customer-facing problem solving. The role is suited to someone who can own outcomes, make decisions in ambiguous situations, and influence stakeholders while helping customers overcome technical barriers and adopt Google Cloud AI capabilities.

What you will do

  • Collaborate with the team to uncover and evaluate business opportunities, identify the technical issues customers are raising, and shape the plan for resolving those blockers.
  • Serve as a technical AI specialist in customer engagements, maintaining the technical relationship with Google’s customers and helping guide them through product and solution briefings.
  • Create demonstrations and proof-of-concept implementations that show how Google Cloud AI technologies can solve customer problems.
  • Work closely with product management to surface and prioritize solutions that improve customer adoption of Google Cloud.
  • Advise customers on how to integrate Google Cloud into their environments, including recommendations on enterprise architecture, platform selection, and the application infrastructure needed for a complete solution.
  • Support developers, creators, and enterprises in using Google’s Generative Language APIs so they can build their own AI-powered products and services.
  • Travel to customer sites, conferences, and other related events when necessary.

What the role requires

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least eight years of experience in software development.
  • At least five years of experience in machine learning design and infrastructure, including work on Generative AI applications and agentic systems.
  • At least three years of experience leading technical projects and providing technical leadership to cross-functional teams.
  • Hands-on experience with Python and production-level systems.
  • Strong ownership of results, the ability to make decisions in uncertain situations, and the confidence to influence stakeholders.
  • Deep expertise in the relevant technical domain.
  • English proficiency, since Google requires English for all roles unless a posting explicitly says otherwise.

Preferred background

  • A master’s degree in engineering, computer science, or another related technical field.
  • Eight years of experience working with data structures and algorithms.
  • Experience building software or infrastructure for scalable, distributed systems and machine learning technologies.
  • Experience designing software architectures that use agentic or GenAI-driven capabilities at scale.
  • Evidence of contributing to the AI/ML community through open-source contributions, technical publications, or speaking at industry conferences.
  • Knowledge of responsible AI practices.

Team and business context

The Generative AI Black Belt team is described as an entrepreneurial group within a rapidly expanding business. Its mission is to help customers unlock the potential of AI and machine learning, while contributing to the future direction of Google Cloud’s AI offerings. The posting also highlights Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform as a leading enterprise AI platform for bringing Gemini models to customers.

More broadly, Google describes its software engineers as people who work on critical projects, often across a wide range of technical areas such as distributed systems, large-scale system design, networking, data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, user interface design, and mobile technologies. Engineers are expected to be versatile, show leadership, and be eager to tackle new problems across the full stack as the business evolves.
