The Alexa International Science team is hiring an Applied Science Manager to lead work on multilingual speech quality and generative AI for Alexa+. This role sits at the intersection of speech science, large language models, and international product launches, with responsibility for improving the voice experience for customers across many supported languages. The team\u00e2\u0080\u0099s mission is to deliver natural, accurate, and culturally appropriate speech experiences, and this position plays a central part in shaping that work.<\/p>\n

The manager will lead a group of applied scientists focused on multilingual speech generation, voice personality, pronunciation, evaluation, and model adaptation. The work includes advancing speech-to-speech and text-to-speech systems, improving voice quality for non-English locales, and helping build technology that scales across more than 20 languages. The role also involves working with Amazon\u00e2\u0080\u0099s large and varied data assets and computing resources to push progress in speech synthesis, pronunciation accuracy, and expressive voice output.<\/p>\n

What you will do<\/h3>\n

  • Manage and guide a team of applied scientists working on Alexa+ capabilities, multilingual speech generation, and related voice technologies.<\/li>\n
  • Set the technical agenda for the team and raise standards for scientific quality, experimental design, and publication readiness.<\/li>\n
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop scientists across multiple levels so the team can grow and perform strongly.<\/li>\n
  • Work closely with stakeholders across the organization to align goals, coordinate execution, and speed up delivery.<\/li>\n
  • Build communication and operating rhythms that help teams work effectively across organizational boundaries.<\/li>\n
  • Ensure science plans are aligned with product launch schedules across many locales and international markets.<\/li>\n
  • Own delivery of speech-quality improvements from early research through production rollout.<\/li>\n
  • Create the success metrics and evaluation frameworks used to measure multilingual speech quality.<\/li>\n
  • Balance long-term research investments with the immediate needs of product launches.<\/li>\n
  • Partner with cross-functional Science, Product, and Engineering leaders on high-visibility programs.<\/li>\n
  • Work with other teams to align Amazon\u00e2\u0080\u0099s large language models with human preferences.<\/li>\n
  • Spot and prioritize research opportunities that could have a major effect on Amazon\u00e2\u0080\u0099s AI systems.<\/li>\n
  • Communicate research progress, findings, and decisions to senior leadership and other stakeholders.<\/li>\n
  • Move quickly from experimentation to productization so customers see impact sooner.<\/li>\n
  • Support academic collaboration with a top Indian university through the organization\u00e2\u0080\u0099s AI\/ML Center initiative.<\/li>\n
  • Contribute to peer-reviewed scientific publications and help the team publish in respected venues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    What we are looking for<\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Direct management experience with scientists or machine learning engineers.<\/li>\n
    • A master\u00e2\u0080\u0099s degree or PhD in a quantitative or technical discipline such as engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, or mathematics, or an equivalent background.<\/li>\n
    • Strong working knowledge of machine learning, NLP, information retrieval, and analytics.<\/li>\n
    • Experience creating highly scalable systems that use predictive models or machine learning applications.<\/li>\n
    • Deep understanding of speech models, including both speech understanding and speech generation.<\/li>\n
    • Strong deep learning background, especially for speech synthesis and multilingual systems.<\/li>\n
    • Familiarity with text-to-speech, speech-to-speech, multilingual phonetics, modern model architectures, and evaluation methods.<\/li>\n
    • Ability to solve complex problems in low-resource language environments and work effectively in a fast-moving setting.<\/li>\n
    • Skill in influencing and aligning multiple teams around a shared scientific vision.<\/li>\n
    • Experience building machine learning models or algorithms for business applications is an advantage.<\/li>\n
    • Experience building complex software systems, especially those involving deep learning, machine learning, or computer vision, that have been delivered to customers is also an advantage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
