This opportunity sits within the land quality function of the Specialist Environmental Services area, which is part of the wider Climate and Sustainability Services group. The team works across a broad range of environmental disciplines and focuses on contaminated land assessment, material and waste issues, environmental permitting, due diligence, and water quality. The role is based in London and is intended for an energetic environmental consultant who can take ownership of project delivery and contribute to a multidisciplinary consultancy environment.<\/p>\n

What the role involves<\/h3>\n

You will lead the delivery of contaminated land assessments for projects at a variety of stages and levels of complexity. The work will involve close collaboration with colleagues from environmental, planning, engineering, and urban design backgrounds, as well as with technical specialists inside and outside the organisation. A key part of the role is helping to provide high-quality environmental consultancy services for contaminated land and brownfield development projects.<\/p>\n

  • Lead technical work on contaminated land assessments from start to finish.<\/li>\n
  • Support and manage junior team members involved in assessment delivery.<\/li>\n
  • Produce environmental reporting, including contamination and ground conditions sections for environmental statements.<\/li>\n
  • Coordinate ground investigation work, including contractor management and liaison with client teams.<\/li>\n
  • Handle project management tasks such as planning programmes and controlling budgets.<\/li>\n
  • Work across multidisciplinary project teams and maintain effective internal coordination.<\/li>\n
  • Communicate directly with clients and keep them informed throughout delivery.<\/li>\n
  • Engage with stakeholders and help negotiate project-related matters where needed.<\/li>\n
  • Contribute to the team\u00e2\u0080\u0099s business development and marketing activity.<\/li>\n
  • Assist with bid preparation and presentation materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Experience and knowledge needed<\/h3>\n

    The successful candidate should have a strong academic background in a relevant subject and be professionally engaged with an appropriate institute. The role expects either chartered status or active progress toward it. Experience in a commercial setting is important, particularly where the work has involved client contact, managing time and delivery schedules, maintaining quality, and handling financial control.<\/p>\n

    • A good honours degree in a relevant discipline.<\/li>\n
    • Membership of a relevant professional organisation such as CIWEM, IES, the Geological Society of London, or the Royal Society of Chemistry.<\/li>\n
    • Either full chartered status or a clear path toward achieving it.<\/li>\n
    • Practical understanding of commercial consultancy work, including client liaison, programme management, time management, quality assurance, and budget control.<\/li>\n
    • Strong grasp of the contaminated land process across the full project lifecycle, from land acquisition and desk study through investigation, assessment, remediation, and verification.<\/li>\n
    • Broader awareness of brownfield development topics such as waste classification, management of excavated materials, use of the DoWCoP, environmental permitting, and environmental impact assessment.<\/li>\n
    • Additional technical awareness in areas such as asbestos in soils, hydrogeology, detailed quantitative risk assessment, remediation techniques, ground gas or vapour assessment, or radiologically contaminated land.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
