This role sits within Arup\u00e2\u0080\u0099s building engineering and transport-focused MEP team, where the successful candidate will take a senior technical and delivery leadership position on rail and wider transport projects. The work spans major schemes in the Midlands and beyond, with involvement in projects at every stage from early feasibility through to completion. The position is centred on delivering innovative, practical and commercially sound electrical and MEP solutions for rail buildings and related transport infrastructure.<\/p>\n

You will be part of a collaborative environment that brings together multidisciplinary project teams, geographical discipline groups and wider Arup networks. The role offers the opportunity to contribute to significant rail and transport work for major clients, while also helping shape the team\u00e2\u0080\u0099s capability, technical direction and future growth. The projects referenced include social infrastructure and transport developments such as stations, depots and aviation-related transport facilities, with work for clients including HS2, Transport for London, Network Rail and other regional and national transport organisations.<\/p>\n

What you will do<\/h3>\n
    \n
  • Take the lead on multidisciplinary design teams from project start through to completion, ensuring the overall MEP and electrical design is coordinated and delivered effectively.<\/li>\n
  • Drive the production of MEP design work using the standards and requirements used across major UK rail programmes, including HS2, Transport for London, Network Rail, Crossrail and other relevant rail frameworks.<\/li>\n
  • Own and manage design assurance activities so that the project output meets the required rail-sector assurance processes and client expectations.<\/li>\n
  • Potentially step into an Electrical Technical Advisor role on projects, using your electrical engineering expertise to guide technical decisions and resolve design issues.<\/li>\n
  • Work closely with Arup\u00e2\u0080\u0099s internal teams, including the Transport group, to create joined-up and holistic design solutions.<\/li>\n
  • Coordinate design programmes and resources in partnership with the rail programmer and the wider multidisciplinary project team.<\/li>\n
  • Support the Transport Lead with major bids and business development activity, while also helping to develop the team\u00e2\u0080\u0099s rail-sector skills, capability and resourcing.<\/li>\n
  • Stay current with legislation, regulations and technical developments relevant to the role and the sector.<\/li>\n
  • Work with the Project Director to support commercial performance, including attention to budgets, milestones, time, cost, quality and safety.<\/li>\n
  • Communicate clearly with clients, project managers and internal stakeholders about progress, risks, issues and mitigation actions.<\/li>\n
  • Help build a culture of shared learning, continuous improvement and adaptability across the team.<\/li>\n
  • Support colleagues in the MEP team so they can develop their skills and reach their potential.<\/li>\n
  • Represent the design or discipline team in discussions with clients and contractors during design and construction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    What Arup is looking for<\/h3>\n

    • A Chartered Mechanical Engineer or Chartered Electrical Engineer with strong knowledge of multidisciplinary MEP design; an electrical engineering background is preferred.<\/li>\n
    • Substantial experience delivering and managing multidisciplinary transport or rail design projects in a consultancy environment.<\/li>\n
    • Proven ability to lead MEP design work in line with major rail standards and processes, including HS2, Transport for London, Network Rail, Crossrail and similar requirements.<\/li>\n
    • Strong leadership skills and the confidence to take responsibility for discipline delivery and project outcomes.<\/li>\n
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across teams and with clients.<\/li>\n
    • Strong client-facing capability and the confidence to represent Arup externally.<\/li>\n
    • Experience leading teams of engineers through all stages of design and construction.<\/li>\n
    • Experience representing a design team or discipline team in discussions with clients and contractors.<\/li>\n
    • The ability to help direct and win new work through bid activity.<\/li>\n
    • A track record of delivering work to a high standard while maintaining quality and value.<\/li>\n
    • Comfort working with sub-consultants and across multidisciplinary project structures.<\/li>\n
