This is a senior mechanical building services role within a collaborative engineering team in the Midlands, with the position available from either the Birmingham or Nottingham office. The work sits within a multidisciplinary group of more than 110 engineers and technicians across both locations, and the projects are international in scope. The role is suited to a Chartered Mechanical Engineer who enjoys technically demanding work and wants to contribute to innovative, high-quality buildings and infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The team works across a wide range of building services challenges, including sustainable strategies, fire suppression systems, drainage in tall buildings, and specialist water, gas, and fluid systems for healthcare, science, and industrial facilities. In this role, you would help shape building services solutions for projects around the world, often working alongside leading architects and other design professionals.<\/p>\n

What you would do<\/h3>\n

  • Lead the design and delivery of mechanical building services systems on complex projects.<\/li>\n
  • Create system strategies and develop mechanical engineering solutions across the full scope of building services work.<\/li>\n
  • Coordinate with clients, project teams, and other stakeholders to align technical decisions and delivery requirements.<\/li>\n
  • Carry out thermal comfort and performance analysis for buildings and internal spaces.<\/li>\n
  • Oversee the preparation of models, drawings, reports, and specifications, ensuring work is completed to agreed budgets and deadlines.<\/li>\n
  • Work closely with colleagues from other disciplines and provide supervision and coordination where needed.<\/li>\n
  • Apply mechanical engineering expertise to projects in sectors such as rail infrastructure, science and industry, universities, residential developments, and healthcare facilities.<\/li>\n
  • Contribute to detailed design work and, where relevant, support renewable technology integration and suitability assessments.<\/li>\n
  • Take part in commercial tasks such as planning resources, estimating fees, and helping prepare proposals for new work.<\/li>\n
  • Support and develop other team members through mentoring, guidance, training, and constructive feedback.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    What the role is looking for<\/h3>\n

    • You should be a Chartered Engineer through IMechE or CIBSE, with broad practical experience in building services systems, installations, and multiple project sectors.<\/li>\n
    • Applicants who are close to chartership, with up to one year remaining before achieving it, may also be considered if they bring equivalent experience and capability.<\/li>\n
    • You need a strong background in delivering complex mechanical building services projects.<\/li>\n
    • Experience in the science, industry, and technology sector at detailed design stage is especially valuable.<\/li>\n
    • Experience with rail buildings across all design assurance levels is also highly regarded.<\/li>\n
    • You should have a clear commitment to sustainable building design, particularly in relation to energy use and carbon reduction.<\/li>\n
    • Experience using energy modelling software such as IES is expected.<\/li>\n
    • Knowledge of renewable technologies and the ability to assess their suitability for projects is important.<\/li>\n
    • You should bring leadership qualities and be able to help others grow through coaching and feedback.<\/li>\n
    • Commercial awareness is needed, including the ability to manage resources, control budgets, and contribute to fee proposals and work-winning activity.<\/li>\n
