Join Deliveroo as an Engineering Manager for Event Streaming Systems, where you will play a crucial role in transforming the way people shop and eat. Our engineering teams tackle complex technical challenges within a global marketplace, building and scaling systems that serve millions of customers, riders, and partners daily. This position is based in our London office with a hybrid working arrangement, typically requiring 3 days in the office.

What You’ll Be Doing

As part of the Event Streaming Systems team within the broader Storage organization, you will lead a team responsible for building and operating reliable, scalable, and efficient streaming infrastructure, including Kafka and EventBus. Your daily responsibilities will include:

• Leading and developing a team of engineers focused on Kafka, EventBus, and event streaming infrastructure.
• Overseeing the delivery of key initiatives for the streaming platform, ensuring a balance between reliability, scalability, and future growth.
• Collaborating with infrastructure and engineering leaders across Deliveroo, DoorDash, and Wolt to establish the streaming strategy and roadmap.
• Enhancing the scalability, observability, automation, and reliability of Tier-0 streaming systems.
• Promoting operational excellence through effective incident management, postmortems, and continuous improvement practices.
• Recruiting, mentoring, and nurturing engineers while fostering a high-performing and inclusive team environment.
• Participating in architecture and design reviews, contributing to technical decision-making for large-scale distributed systems.

What You’ll Need to Thrive

The ideal candidate will possess strong expertise in some of the following areas and a willingness to grow in others:

• Proven experience in leading teams focused on streaming infrastructure, platform, or distributed systems engineering.
• Familiarity with Kafka or large-scale event streaming systems.
• Strong technical expertise in scalable production systems, with a history of managing high-reliability infrastructure.
• Experience in building or maintaining event streaming, storage, or data infrastructure on a large scale.
• Demonstrated ability to hire, mentor, and develop engineering talent while establishing clear expectations and a positive team culture.
• Proven track record of driving execution on complex technical initiatives involving multiple stakeholders.
• A mindset geared towards operational excellence, including skills in incident leadership, observability, reliability engineering, and continuous improvement.
• Effective communication and stakeholder management skills, capable of influencing technical and organizational direction across teams.
