Join a multi-disciplinary engineering organisation that builds and operates the technology behind a large, real-time marketplace serving millions of customers, riders, and partners. The work sits at the intersection of impact, innovation, and growth, with engineering teams solving difficult technical problems across logistics, infrastructure, and marketplace optimisation. In this role, you will help create and support high-performance systems that keep the platform running smoothly at scale and deliver a seamless experience for users.
This position is based in Deliveroo’s London office and follows a hybrid working arrangement, with a typical expectation of three days per week on site. The role is permanent and sits within the Technology function.
What you will do
- Develop and extend backend services that power a real-time marketplace, working with languages such as Go, Ruby, or Python.
- Contribute to the design of scalable systems that can support high-volume, always-on traffic and the operational demands of a fast-moving platform.
- Improve code quality, structure, and architecture by taking part in deep technical conversations and reviewing code across the team’s scope.
- Help make production systems more reliable by improving visibility, monitoring, and overall operational health.
- Work closely with engineers in other teams to identify opportunities for integration and to influence the technical roadmap in your area.
- Support the hiring process by interviewing engineering candidates and helping strengthen the team through thoughtful recruitment.
- Contribute to the maintenance of production systems while helping ensure they remain ready for operational use and healthy in day-to-day operation.
What you will need
- Experience building web applications in a modern language such as Go, Ruby/Rails, Python, Scala, or Rust.
- A strong commitment to writing software that is readable, well designed, and well tested, with maintainability in mind.
- Good knowledge of relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
- Understanding of web architecture at scale, ideally in environments that handle heavy traffic of around 20,000 requests per minute or more.
- Exposure to NoSQL systems or caching technologies such as Redis, DynamoDB, or Elasticsearch.
- A problem-solving approach suited to complex logistics or marketplace challenges.
- Curiosity and a willingness to grow in some areas while bringing strength in others.
- The ability to collaborate effectively within a team that values technical execution and shared ownership.
