Job Role Head of Mobile Engineering
Qualifications Not Specified
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location London

This is a senior mobile leadership position focused on building and shaping mobile capability in the UK while working directly with major clients and multidisciplinary delivery teams. The role blends technical direction, consulting, capability building, and commercial contribution. It is designed for someone who can operate confidently across strategy, architecture, and delivery, while also helping Valtech grow its mobile practice and strengthen its market position.

The work sits within an environment that values continuous learning, meaningful impact, and professional growth. The successful person will help clients modernise mobile platforms, define mobile strategy, and deliver high-quality digital experiences at scale across native and cross-platform ecosystems. The role is split between client strategy and delivery on one side, and operational leadership plus capability growth on the other.

What the role is trying to achieve

Success in this position means helping create a mobile practice that is strong, scalable, and recognised for quality. The role is expected to contribute to stronger technical communities, clearer engineering standards, trusted client relationships, increased mobile revenue, high-performing teams, and ongoing innovation in mobile and adjacent technologies.

Client delivery and advisory leadership

  • Act as a senior advisor to client stakeholders, building trust and helping them make informed decisions about mobile direction and delivery.
  • Take senior oversight of complex programmes, stepping in early when risks emerge so that outcomes, people, and client relationships are protected.
  • Connect different disciplines so that architecture, engineering, design, product, strategy, and data work together effectively.
  • Track the overall condition of the mobile practice, including whether skills match demand, how engaged the community is, and whether delivery quality is strong, then respond to what those indicators show.
  • Facilitate workshops and help clients develop mobile transformation roadmaps.
  • Guide decisions around platform modernisation and mobile architecture.
  • Work closely with Product, Design, Data, and Engineering colleagues to deliver joined-up solutions.
  • Help shape strategic technology investment decisions.

Capability building and people leadership

  • Set and evolve Valtech’s mobile vision and strategy in the UK.
  • Grow the mobile engineering capability and help make it more effective over time.
  • Hold line-management accountability within the practice, including responsibility for managers who report into this role.
  • Ensure regular one-to-ones, development discussions, performance calibration, succession planning, and difficult conversations are handled well.
  • Coach new and emerging leaders so they can manage with consistency, confidence, and care.
  • Help shape career pathways and skills frameworks so progression is clear and transparent.
  • Support people development through coaching, mentoring, and strong management practices.
  • Set engineering standards and promote best practices across the practice.
  • Build communities of practice and mentor engineers and architects.
  • Encourage purposeful innovation, from small internal experiments to external thought leadership such as speaking, writing, and publishing whitepapers.

Technical leadership

  • Provide architectural oversight for complex mobile programmes.
  • Lead technical approaches across iOS, Android, and cross-platform technologies.
  • Make sure solutions are designed to be scalable, secure, and resilient.
  • Promote modern engineering practices, including continuous integration and delivery, observability, and automation.
  • Explore emerging areas such as AI-enabled mobile experiences and intelligent assistants.

Commercial contribution and growth

  • Work with UK growth teams on pitches and pre-sales activity.
  • Bring a credible technical and craft perspective into senior commercial conversations.
  • Support strategic UK initiatives so the practice contributes to broader business priorities.
  • Help develop proposals and solution designs.
  • Identify opportunities to grow client accounts and expand engagements.
  • Represent Valtech externally through industry engagement and thought leadership.
  • Help reinforce Valtech’s reputation as a leader in mobile innovation and digital experience.

Experience and qualifications needed

The ideal candidate will have a background leading mobile engineering teams, practices, or capability groups, along with strong consulting and stakeholder management skills. They should be comfortable influencing senior business and technology leaders and should enjoy coaching and developing other people.

Technical experience should include native mobile development on iOS and/or Android, plus exposure to cross-platform tools such as Flutter or React Native. The role also calls for experience with mobile architecture and platform strategy, API-driven systems, CI/CD and DevOps practices, security and authentication, analytics and observability, and cloud-native platforms with backend integration.

Because this is a consulting-facing role, the candidate should have worked in consulting, agency, or digital transformation environments and be comfortable moving between strategy, architecture, and delivery. Experience leading client engagements and workshops is important, as are strong communication, presentation, and commercial skills.

Desirable experience

  • Experience with AI-powered mobile experiences or agentic AI.
  • Knowledge of modern data platforms and personalisation tools.
  • Experience leading teams spread across multiple geographies.
  • Public speaking, published thought leadership, or wider contributions to the technology community.

Culture and inclusion

Valtech says it is committed to building an inclusive workplace where people from all backgrounds feel supported to grow, thrive, and achieve their goals. The company states that everyone belongs there and encourages applicants to learn more about its diversity and inclusion approach.

Application process

Applicants are invited to apply through the online form. The form requests standard contact details, a CV, and an optional cover letter. It also asks whether the applicant has demonstrable experience in a client-facing consulting environment and whether they have demonstrable experience in both team leadership and technical leadership. Applicants are asked to provide their desired salary or salary range and to indicate how they heard about the opportunity. The form includes a privacy notice acknowledgement and an optional demographic survey that is not used in hiring decisions.
