An engineering recruitment client is looking for an experienced Lead Mechanical Engineer to join its team working on electric machine technology. The role sits within a multidisciplinary engineering environment and focuses on the mechanical and thermal design of electric motors for demanding applications. The successful person will contribute to the creation of robust, high-performing products and will work closely with colleagues across different engineering disciplines throughout the product lifecycle.
What you will do
- Take the lead on mechanical engineering activities for the development of electric machine and motor technology.
- Produce motor designs that satisfy performance goals, durability expectations, and cost constraints.
- Make sure the mechanical and thermal behaviour of the motor remains reliable across all operating conditions.
- Carry out and maintain detailed FMEA work and associated risk mitigation actions.
- Set up and execute structured verification and validation plans for the design.
- Support design validation through hands-on build and test activities.
- Assist with the handover of products from development into production.
- Work collaboratively with cross-functional engineering teams from concept through to release.
What the employer is looking for
- Proven background in electric machine or motor design, with particular strength in mechanical and thermal engineering aspects.
- Experience designing rotor systems, including magnet retention approaches and operation at high speed.
- Knowledge of stator design and winding integration.
- Practical, hands-on experience with motor assembly, testing, and validation.
- Experience leading and performing FMEA and failure analysis activities.
- Understanding of air-cooled thermal management techniques.
- Evidence of working successfully in multidisciplinary engineering teams.
