Sr. Electrical Engineer, EU AMZL Sustainability Engineering Overview

Company Name Amazon
Job Role Sr. Electrical Engineer, EU AMZL Sustainability Engineering
Qualifications Bachelor’s
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location London

This role sits within Amazon’s EU Sustainability Engineering organization and focuses on the electrical systems that support the company’s transition to lower-carbon transportation and more efficient operations. The team is working on the infrastructure behind Amazon’s electrification efforts at very large scale, including the expansion of EV charging networks, smarter grid solutions, and energy-efficient electrical systems across operational sites. The work is closely tied to Amazon’s Climate Pledge commitment to reach net-zero carbon across operations by 2040, and the role is intended for someone who can help design, standardize, and scale the electrical foundation that makes these programs possible.

The position is based across several European locations, with the page listing Luxembourg, London, Milan, Munich, and Barcelona. The role involves working with a wide range of internal partners and external suppliers to define standards, validate designs, support field execution, and help shape the roadmap for future electrical infrastructure.

What you will do

  • Set the technical direction for electrical equipment used across the network by defining and maintaining standards and by developing repeatable infrastructure designs with manufacturers.
  • Review and validate engineering designs so installation teams can meet electrical requirements and issues can be identified before work reaches the field.
  • Act as the technical specialist supporting Field Engineering teams as they prepare for on-site deployment and execution.
  • Coordinate expectations across teams involved in installing EV charging infrastructure and smart grid systems.
  • Help guide the long-term technology roadmap for high-voltage and low-voltage infrastructure, including EV chargers, substations, energy-efficiency solutions, and IoT technologies such as smart meters.
  • Develop business cases and present them to senior leaders to secure approval and funding for new programs.
  • Work with project managers to plan and deliver large-scale installations across multiple countries.
  • Lead and encourage improvements in commissioning, auditing, value engineering, and cost control.
  • Collaborate with Operations, RME, Health & Safety, Global Fleet Product, Finance, Procurement, and outside vendors to design and deploy electrical infrastructure across Amazon’s EU operational network.

What the role looks like day to day

The work is varied and fast-moving. A typical day could include reviewing substation designs with a manufacturer in the morning, aligning with Operations and Finance on rollout plans during the middle of the day, and presenting a technology roadmap to senior leadership later on. The role requires regular interaction with people at many levels of the organization and combines technical engineering work with stakeholder management and program coordination.

About the team

EU Sustainability Engineering is responsible for defining and continuously improving the electrical standards that support Amazon’s EV charging network and smart grid solutions. The team places strong emphasis on both reliability and cost efficiency, with the belief that unnecessary waste is a major barrier to meaningful sustainability progress. Because Amazon’s last-mile network is so large, the team works closely every day with Operations, On Road (DSP), and RME partners.

Required background

  • A master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience leading large-scale projects through the full product development lifecycle in a substantial cross-functional environment.
  • Experience taking technical or collaborative projects from concept through delivery, or experience providing technical support in a similar setting.

Preferred experience

  • Strong English communication skills, both written and spoken.
  • Direct experience building electrical engineering systems, including large-scale power distribution or generation equipment.
  • Experience with mechanical engineering systems, including cooling systems.

Additional information

Amazon describes itself as an equal opportunities employer and says that decisions are made based on experience and skills. The company also states that it values diversity and inclusion, and that applicants who need a disability accommodation or adjustment during the application, interview, or onboarding process can find support through Amazon’s accommodations process.
