This opportunity is with an established product development company located just outside Cambridge in Cambridgeshire. The business develops advanced communications technology for defence and aerospace use, with a strong focus on solving difficult engineering problems where systems must stay secure, robust, and effective in challenging operating conditions.

The role is aimed at an RF engineer who enjoys working across both circuit-level and system-level design. The work spans the entire development journey, beginning with early concepts and system architecture and continuing through circuit design, prototyping, integration, and laboratory testing. The successful candidate will help create specialist communications hardware for applications such as secure communications, air defence, counter-UAS, and space-based systems.

What you will do

  • Design specialist RF communications hardware for defence and aerospace applications.
  • Contribute to projects covering secure communications, air defence, counter-UAS, and space systems.
  • Take part in the full development cycle, from initial technical ideas and architecture decisions through to circuit implementation, prototyping, integration, and lab validation.
  • Build and debug RF hardware, identifying and resolving issues that affect performance.
  • Work across both circuit-level detail and broader system-level behaviour.
  • Investigate technical problems and collaborate with antenna, signal processing, electronics, and systems specialists to deliver complete products.
  • Use laboratory resources, including dedicated RF labs and an anechoic chamber, to test and refine designs.
  • Help ensure communications systems are resilient, secure, and suitable for demanding real-world environments.

What the employer is looking for

  • A degree in electronics, electrical engineering, or a similar subject.
  • Strong fundamentals in RF communications.
  • Practical experience developing, testing, and debugging RF circuits or RF systems.
  • Confidence working at both the circuit and system level.
  • A hands-on mindset and the ability to solve complex technical challenges.
  • Experience with communications hardware, which is the main priority for the role.
  • Useful but not essential background in RF system simulation.
  • Helpful exposure to antenna design or antenna testing.
  • Useful knowledge of digital signal processing.

What is on offer

  • Profit-related bonus.
  • Employer pension contribution of 10%.
  • Private medical cover.
  • 25 days of holiday.
  • Access to specialist RF laboratory facilities.
  • Access to an anechoic chamber.
  • A broad mix of technically varied projects.
  • Greater ownership of work and the chance to see your designs progress into real-world deployment.

The role is based in Cambridgeshire, England, just outside Cambridge.
