The Alexa International Tech team is seeking an inventive applied scientist with a strong background in deep learning to help create next-generation generative AI for Alexa. The work centers on large language models and multimodal systems, with a particular focus on making Alexa sound more natural, expressive, and culturally appropriate across different languages and locales. This is a chance to combine research and production engineering in a role that has direct impact on a product used by customers around the world.
What you will do
- Develop new algorithms and modeling methods that advance the state of the art in multimodal machine learning, especially for speech generation.
- Use Amazonâs large-scale data and compute environment to train models that improve the quality, naturalness, expressiveness, and cultural fit of Alexaâs speech experiences.
- Design experiments, build prototypes, and iterate quickly to test ideas and validate hypotheses.
- Work closely with engineering teams to move research prototypes into production systems that can serve customers at scale.
- Contribute research findings to leading conferences and help expand Amazonâs patent portfolio.
- Provide technical leadership in situations where the problem space is not fully defined, and turn complex model and data insights into clear written and visual communication.
- Mentor junior scientists, influence technical decisions, and present results effectively to both technical and non-technical partners.
- Review experiment results, refine model architectures, and improve speech generation systems as part of the regular workflow.
- Collaborate with software engineers on deployment efficiency and with product managers to ensure research work is aligned with customer needs.
- Participate in science reviews, reading groups, and brainstorming sessions with other scientists across the organization.
Team context
The Alexa International Tech organization is a global team with engineering presence across all three regions. Its mission is to build an Alexa assistant that feels locally relevant, linguistically fluent, and culturally present. The team describes itself as operating with a startup-style pace inside Amazon, aiming to deliver breakthrough experiences while maintaining high scientific standards.
What the role is looking for
- A PhD, or a masterâs degree combined with relevant experience, in computer science, computer engineering, machine learning, or a related field.
- Research credibility demonstrated through patents or publications in respected peer-reviewed conferences or journals.
- Programming ability in Java, C++, Python, or a similar language.
- Practical knowledge in one or more of the following areas: algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, or high-performance computing.
- Experience building machine learning models for business applications.
- Comfort working through ambiguity and explaining complex scientific work in a clear and structured way.
- Strong communication skills for collaborating across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Preferred experience with Unix/Linux.
- Preferred experience in professional software development.
Working style
The role involves close day-to-day collaboration with scientists, engineers, and product managers. A typical day may include reviewing experiment results, adjusting model architectures for speech generation, working with engineers to prepare models for deployment, and joining science discussions and brainstorming sessions. The work is centered in London and no remote or hybrid arrangement is specified in the posting.
