| Category | IT Jobs |
| Job Type | Full Time |
| Location | London |
Deliveroo is hiring a Senior Android Engineer to join its SDUI team in London. The role sits within the Technology function and focuses on the companyâs server-driven UI platform, which allows teams to build an interface once and deploy it across iOS, Android, and web without needing to ship a new app release each time. The position is based in Deliverooâs London office and follows a hybrid working model, with a typical expectation of three days per week in the office.
The broader engineering organisation works on difficult technical problems across a large global marketplace that connects customers, riders, and partners. The team builds and operates systems that support real-time logistics, resilient infrastructure, and marketplace optimisation at scale. This role is part of that mission, with a particular emphasis on making UI delivery faster, safer, and more consistent across platforms.
What you will do
- Take technical ownership of the Android rendering layer for Deliverooâs server-driven UI platform, and also contribute to the backend services that power it.
- Build and evolve the renderer so it can handle complex, real-time UI updates reliably and at scale, using Kotlin, Golang, and Protobuf where appropriate.
- Improve the architecture of the platform, review code, and help ensure the renderer remains maintainable, observable, and operationally healthy as more teams depend on it.
- Work with engineers across iOS and web, plus product and design colleagues, to coordinate releases, align on platform direction, and shape the roadmap.
- Lead major initiatives from design through delivery, including efforts to improve motion and interaction quality so the SDUI experience feels equivalent to native UI, and work involved in moving away from older rendering approaches.
- Mentor other engineers and contribute to hiring, helping strengthen the wider engineering team.
What the team is looking for
- At least five years of experience building Android apps at scale, with strong knowledge of Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.
- Experience working on backend systems, particularly with Golang, Kotlin, and Protobuf, and the ability to move between client and server work as needed.
- Hands-on experience building or maintaining a server-driven or declarative UI system, along with curiosity about what can be achieved with declarative rendering; experience with Litho or a similar DSL-based renderer would be an advantage.
- A product-focused mindset and the ability to apply that perspective when designing platform services for other teams.
- Evidence of owning technical delivery in cross-functional settings, including influencing implementation decisions and technical design for shared platform work.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across time zones with iOS, web, backend, product management, and multiple product teams.
- A strong commitment to software quality, including writing code that is readable, well designed, and thoroughly tested.
- Additional experience with Figma-to-code tooling, design-token or theming systems, or accessibility work in mobile rendering would be beneficial.
