Cloudflare is hiring a software engineer to join its Front Line engineering group, the team responsible for the company’s main web server and for helping keep the edge platform fast, safe, reliable, and highly available at massive scale. The role sits within a broader engineering organization that supports a software platform handling millions of HTTP requests every second, builds internal tools that help teams ship products quickly, and operates software updates across a global network of more than 200 data centers.

The company describes its culture as one that values builders, curiosity, and practical problem-solving over rigid process. It emphasizes using modern tools, including AI, to move quickly, learn continuously, and share improvements across the team. The work is centered on improving the internet at scale and contributing to systems that serve customers ranging from individual creators to large enterprises.

What you will work on

  • Partner with skilled engineers to improve the availability, safety, and reliability of Cloudflare’s edge ecosystem.
  • Help strengthen the platform so it becomes more dependable, more secure, and better able to support traffic at the edge.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the company’s core web server, which processes extremely large volumes of HTTP traffic.
  • Improve operational efficiency, deployment safety, release frequency, automation, and observability across the platform.
  • Work closely with product and engineering teams across the company to design and implement solutions that affect shared infrastructure.
  • Take part in work that connects edge application development with operational excellence, helping shape how Cloudflare runs and evolves its systems.
  • Use strong computer science fundamentals to make good design choices around algorithms, data structures, concurrency, and distributed-system architecture.
  • Contribute to ongoing improvements in both operations and new product development.
  • Learn and work within a large Rust-based codebase shared by more than 20 teams.

Skills and experience Cloudflare is looking for

  • Solid practical computer science knowledge, especially in applying algorithms, data structures, and concurrency control to software design.
  • Experience building large distributed systems.
  • Experience with performance engineering.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and help drive alignment and consensus across teams.
  • A strong drive to keep improving systems, processes, and products over time.
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for learning new things, especially when solving unusual technical challenges at internet scale.
  • Comfort working in a highly collaborative environment on a shared platform used by many teams.

Helpful background, but not strictly required

  • Experience with Rust.
  • Experience with Go.
  • Knowledge of web servers and web protocols.
  • Understanding of distributed systems.
  • Awareness of web security concerns and relevant industry standards.

Team and company context

The Front Line group owns what Cloudflare describes as the largest web server in the world. The team’s work focuses on improving efficiency, safety, deployment speed, automation, and observability for a platform that handles more than 150 million HTTP requests per second. The engineering environment is highly collaborative, with over 20 teams contributing to the same Rust codebase.

Cloudflare presents itself as a mission-driven company focused on protecting and improving the open internet. The posting highlights several public-interest initiatives, including Project Galileo, which supports journalism and civil society organizations; the Athenian Project, which helps protect local election websites; and 1.1.1.1, the company’s privacy-focused public DNS resolver. The company also states that it does not sell user data to advertisers or use it to target consumers.
