Team and role context

This position sits within the Platform Operations & Compliance team. That group focuses on connecting Altana’s products with customer environments so the company can deliver tailored insights, business process integrations, and shared value. The team works closely with customers as well as internal Engineering, Machine Learning, InfoSec, and Product teams.

  • Help evolve the platform so it becomes more scalable and better aligned with changing customer needs.
  • Support the reliability, cost efficiency, and control of the platform, particularly for large-scale pipelines serving public-sector customers.
  • Contribute to customer security reviews and accreditation work by providing technical support and evidence.
  • Serve as a technical expert in customer-facing discussions, helping translate complex government requirements into practical platform architecture and implementation choices.
  • Collaborate in a cross-functional environment with engineers, data scientists, and product managers to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Assess new tools, technologies, and engineering practices that can improve pipeline development, orchestration, and deployment.
  • Take ownership of the full lifecycle of data solutions, including design, development, testing, release, monitoring, and maintenance.
  • Mentor and support other engineers working on advanced data engineering initiatives.

What the company is looking for

  • At least eight years of professional experience in data engineering or a closely related technical field.
  • Strong experience designing, building, and maintaining complex data models that combine information from many different sources and schema types.
  • A proven record of leading data ingestion and standardization pipelines through the entire lifecycle at scale.
  • Experience creating sustainable software and data workflows, including self-healing systems, with a strong focus on data security and governance.
  • Hands-on experience deploying and integrating software in customer cloud environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Practical knowledge of core cloud services and infrastructure components such as EC2, S3, IAM, and Dockerized microservices.
  • Experience leading and mentoring engineers on complex data engineering projects.
  • Willingness and eligibility to obtain UK Security Check clearance, or an active clearance already in place.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience working directly with external customers and stakeholders to define technical scope and manage expectations.
  • A strong habit of keeping up with current data engineering trends, along with a commitment to engineering excellence and knowledge sharing.

Helpful experience, but not essential

  • Experience running a data platform, including release management, cost tracking, and infrastructure changes.
  • Experience deploying machine learning pipelines.
  • Background in trade compliance, supply chain management, or another area connected to international commerce.
  • Experience working in or alongside the public sector.
  • Comfort using AI tools to improve the quality and speed of your work.
