Staff Performance Tools Engineer Overview

Company Name ARM
Job Role Staff Performance Tools Engineer
Qualifications Not Specified
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location Manchester

This role is for an experienced software engineer who will help create the tools that shape how performance is measured and analyzed on Arm platforms. The team builds Arm’s telemetry solution, which is a collection of open-source reference tools that demonstrate Arm’s performance methods across compute subsystems such as CPUs, interconnects, memory systems, and related areas. The work involves partnering with architects from Arm IP groups and turning their performance methodologies into practical tooling that can be used by Arm’s internal performance teams, external partners, and the wider open-source community.

The team emphasizes curiosity, learning speed, and a willingness to explore how compute systems really behave. Candidates do not need to match every requirement perfectly. Arm highlights that engineers are given time to become comfortable with unfamiliar technologies, including kernel performance subsystems, TypeScript/JavaScript, and SQL. The role also offers the chance to take ownership of larger features from start to finish, building deep domain expertise while working in a collaborative environment where design and code review happen incrementally as a team.

What you will do

  • Develop and continuously improve the telemetry tooling so developers can apply Arm’s performance methods and act on the signals the tools produce.
  • Work alongside architects and analysis teams to convert findings and requirements into product features, tests, examples, and documentation.
  • Use synthetic workloads and targeted microbenchmarks to verify performance methodologies, sometimes including Arm assembly when needed.
  • Coordinate with kernel and firmware teams to ensure the required performance-measurement mechanisms, such as PMUs and perf_event interfaces, are available and usable.
  • Take ownership of substantial features end to end, from design through implementation and delivery.
  • Participate in collaborative design discussions and code reviews as part of the engineering team’s working style.

What Arm is looking for

  • Strong Python ability for building tooling, handling data, and automating workflows.
  • Comfort working in C and C++ to understand and reason about low-level performance systems across kernel and user space.
  • Good debugging and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience shipping tools for developers and improving them through feedback from real users.
  • Experience owning complex features from beginning to end.
  • Willingness to learn new stacks and technologies, including kernel performance tooling, TypeScript/JavaScript, and SQL.
  • Curiosity about computer systems and how they work at a detailed level.

Helpful additional experience

  • SQL experience, for example with SQLite, especially for trace querying and analysis.
  • Web development knowledge, including TypeScript/JavaScript, HTML, and WebSocket, for static web application front ends.
  • Exposure to hardware architecture concepts such as pipelines, caches, MMUs, interconnects, timers, and multithreading.
  • Open-source contribution experience and familiarity with modern CI/CD workflows.
  • Understanding of operating system building blocks such as processes, threads, locks, and virtual memory, and how they influence application performance.
  • Basic assembly knowledge and some familiarity with Arm architecture.

What you can expect in return

You will have the chance to learn about and influence the latest Arm architecture features while working closely with highly skilled engineering teams on advanced technology. You will also collaborate with compiler and runtime specialists as well as open-source communities, contributing to language implementations that are used by millions of developers around the world. In addition, you will be encouraged to keep improving how the team works and to help roll out better ways of working.

The role is based in Manchester, United Kingdom, and Arm uses a hybrid working approach. The company’s hybrid model is intended to support both strong performance and personal wellbeing by bringing people together in person while still allowing flexibility.
