This role is part of Google Shopping within Googleâs Advertising and Commerce organization, and it focuses on building data science solutions that help merchants and consumers at global scale. The teamâs mission is to create scalable, commercially focused, machine-consumable data products and insights that make complex problems easier to solve and improve outcomes across the commerce ecosystem. In this position, you would operate as a senior technical leader who combines advanced statistical thinking, deep domain knowledge, and strong product judgment to shape high-impact work across engineering and product teams.
The role is designed for someone who can work with a high degree of independence, tackle the organizationâs most ambiguous and difficult problems, and help turn analytical work into durable products rather than isolated analyses. You would partner closely with Engineering and Product to influence Googleâs agentic AI commerce initiatives, contribute to a fast-moving one-team operating model, and help ensure that the data science work is robust, reproducible, and built for long-term use.
What you will do
- Define ambitious data science goals and convert unclear business or product questions into structured measurement and analysis frameworks that can be audited and trusted.
- Transform complex data flows, causal inference methods, and agentic workflows into sustainable data products and reusable code assets.
- Provide fast, high-quality analytical guidance to Engineering and Product Management leaders so they can make informed decisions about roadmaps and strategic direction.
- Develop and evaluate sophisticated metrics, including approaches for assessing conversational and agentic systems, while collaborating with data engineering on schema design.
- Jump into urgent, high-friction data science problems, deliver quick insights, and still maintain strong standards for experimentation, modeling, and communication.
- Serve as a bridge between advanced quantitative analysis and business strategy across multiple high-impact teams.
- Work independently on the companyâs most complex and ambiguous challenges rather than being limited to a single product area.
- Help build scalable, commercially oriented data products and insights that support both merchants and consumers.
- Contribute directly to the development of Googleâs agentic AI commerce products in a collaborative, cross-functional environment.
- Be part of a global data science group of roughly 30 people based in Mountain View and London.
What Google is looking for
- A bachelorâs degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Engineering, Physics, Economics, or another related quantitative field.
- At least 10 years of experience using analytics to solve product or business problems, performing statistical analysis, and writing code in tools such as Python, R, or SQL; alternatively, 5 years of experience plus a masterâs degree.
- A masterâs degree in a quantitative discipline is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to own outcomes, make decisions, solve ambiguous problems, and influence stakeholders.
- Strong domain expertise relevant to the work.
- Experience turning ambiguous concepts into statistical models, data structures, and production-quality code that becomes a sustainable data product.
- Background working with e-commerce or marketplace data, including user acquisition, inventory, and merchant or consumer behavior.
- Experience with large language models, causal inference, large-scale experimentation, and evaluation design for agentic workflows.
- Experience taking full accountability for a technical codebase while balancing delivery speed, analytical debt, and model stability.
- Ability to produce rigorous, reproducible scientific work and communicate findings clearly to technical and business partners.
- English proficiency, since Google states that English is required for all roles unless the posting explicitly says otherwise.
