Staff Software Engineer Overview

Company Name ARM
Job Role Staff Software Engineer
Qualifications Not Specified
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location Cambridge

This role is part of Arm’s System Solutions software organization and focuses on software for Arm Neoverse-based platforms. The work spans the full lifecycle from early platform bring-up on pre-silicon environments through to production-ready firmware on real silicon. The team supports platform bring-up, boot flows, system configuration, and the enablement of architecture features, and the position includes both technical leadership and people leadership within that focus area.

The wider context for the role is Arm’s continued expansion in server and infrastructure markets, where high-quality system software is essential for delivering production-ready platforms to customers and partners. The successful candidate will help shape low-level software and firmware for next-generation systems, with a strong emphasis on system architecture, performance, and silicon bring-up.

What you will do

  • Lead the design, development, and refinement of low-level software and firmware components for advanced platforms.
  • Create and validate firmware across pre-silicon environments, including virtual platforms, FPGA-based systems, and emulators, and then support bring-up on actual silicon.
  • Work in close partnership with hardware, validation, and system engineering colleagues to ensure the software stack integrates cleanly with the platform.
  • Improve system performance by targeting latency, bandwidth, and power efficiency.
  • Diagnose and fix complex issues that cross the boundary between hardware and software.
  • Manage a team of 3 to 5 engineers, including setting goals and carrying out performance assessments.
  • Coach junior engineers and provide technical guidance to other teams working in the same domain.

What Arm is looking for

  • Deep industry experience building complex system software, along with a proven record of leadership, mentoring, and successful delivery.
  • Practical firmware development experience on both pre-silicon and silicon platforms, ideally in Arm-based environments, with direct ownership of complex technical design work.
  • Strong engineering judgement, including the ability to evaluate trade-offs, manage risk, and protect long-term software quality.
  • Experience with infrastructure-scale system software and one or more related areas such as RAS, virtualization, power management, BMCs, telemetry, debugging, or diagnostics.
  • Excellent communication skills and a history of effective collaboration across teams and sites.
  • Experience in server or infrastructure environments, especially where the work is customer-facing or production-facing, would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of system architecture, preferably Arm architecture, plus operating system fundamentals, boot loaders, and device drivers, would be helpful.
  • Exposure to open-source software or upstream communities such as Linux, edk2, TF-A, or TF-M would be beneficial.
  • Understanding of standard development practices, including testing strategy, continuous integration, and release planning, would be useful.
  • Experience working with globally distributed teams would be an advantage.

What you can expect in return

This is an opportunity to lead a critical system software team working on important technology, with real influence over technical direction, delivery outcomes, and team culture inside a highly capable global engineering organization.

Arm provides a salary range of £97,300 to £131,700 per year for this position.

Arm also offers a broader rewards package that supports health and wellbeing, work-life balance, financial recognition, and ongoing development and support.

Reasonable accommodations are available for applicants and employees with disabilities during the recruitment process, for essential job functions, and for other employment-related benefits and privileges. Candidates can request support by contacting Arm directly.
