An established medical and optical instrumentation business is looking for a Sustainability Engineer to help support the ongoing development, maintenance, and long-term viability of complex electronic products. This position is centered on extending the life of existing hardware platforms, improving them where needed, and working closely with the teams involved in manufacturing, quality, and design. It is a practical, technically involved role in a regulated product environment, with responsibility spanning the full lifecycle of the hardware.

What you will do

  • Provide support for existing electronic products from the point they enter production through to their eventual end-of-life stage.
  • Investigate hardware faults and quality issues that arise during manufacturing, from suppliers, or once products are in the field.
  • Manage obsolescence challenges by finding suitable replacement components, identifying second-source options, and implementing the necessary design updates.
  • Carry out engineering changes to keep products current and supportable, including updates to schematics, PCB revisions, and bill of materials changes.
  • Update compliance evidence, verification records, and technical documentation so that regulated products remain properly supported.
  • Work with suppliers, manufacturers, and internal stakeholders to maintain product continuity and avoid disruption to supply.
  • Partner with manufacturing, quality, and design colleagues to improve existing hardware platforms and extend their usable life.
  • Take a hands-on role in sustaining and evolving established electronic products rather than focusing only on new product development.

What the employer is looking for

  • Experience in electronic hardware engineering or a related sustainability engineering background.
  • Practical familiarity with schematic capture, PCB design, or making design modifications to existing hardware.
  • Knowledge of component lifecycle management and approaches for dealing with obsolescence.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work through root cause analysis in a structured way.
  • Experience working in regulated or quality-focused environments.
  • A degree in Electronic Engineering or a similar discipline.
  • The ability to work effectively with internal teams and external suppliers in a collaborative technical role.
