System Development Engineer, AWS Networking Overview

Company Name Amazon
Job Role System Development Engineer, AWS Networking
Qualifications Not Specified
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location London

This role sits within AWS networking and focuses on the software, services, and internal tooling that keep one of the world’s largest cloud networks running. Rather than simply using cloud infrastructure, the position is for an engineer who helps build and improve the systems behind it. The work is centered on supporting network engineers by developing, operating, fixing, and continuously reinventing the software components they depend on to automate the network and maintain reliable operations.

The environment is described as fast-moving and highly collaborative, with the feel of a startup but the scale and impact of a global cloud platform. The team works in an Agile way and values engineers who are motivated, curious, and eager to solve difficult operational and technical problems. Internal customers for this role are the network engineering teams, and the job involves close partnership with them to share ideas, improve tools, and strengthen the overall operation of the AWS network.

What you will do

  • Take ownership of the services your team runs and improve them across their full lifecycle, from design and implementation through deployment and ongoing support.
  • Diagnose problems in production systems, identify the real underlying cause, and deliver long-term fixes that prevent the same issue from recurring.
  • Improve testing, observability, and validation across services, tools, and infrastructure so new versions can be released with minimal disruption.
  • Build automation and internal tools that reduce manual operational effort and make network operations more efficient for multiple teams.
  • Design and implement new software capabilities, products, or services that improve operational efficiency and help solve network engineering challenges.
  • Investigate complex technical and business problems in a global organization and turn those investigations into practical engineering changes.
  • Work closely with network engineers as your internal stakeholders, supporting their goals through software and tooling improvements.
  • Contribute to the ongoing operation, monitoring, and assurance of the AWS network across large regions through the Systems Development team’s platforms and services.
  • Make sensible engineering trade-offs that balance immediate needs with future scalability and maintainability.
  • Help drive innovation in the software and tooling used to operate AWS networking at scale.

Team context

The Systems Development team owns the software services and platforms that build, operate, monitor, and assure the AWS network across entire regions. The team’s mission is to create automation and new software solutions that improve operational efficiency for network engineering customers. The work is positioned at the center of AWS’s large-scale network infrastructure, where complex operational challenges are turned into scalable systems that improve reliability and efficiency.

Joining this team means working alongside highly experienced networking and software professionals, with opportunities to learn from them and contribute to major programs that have significant impact.
