Job Type Full Time
Location Birmingham

Arup is looking for an experienced Transport Modeller to join its Transport Consulting team, working in a collaborative and creative environment at the centre of the company’s transport planning and modelling capability. The wider transport planning practice works across the UK and internationally and partners with multidisciplinary teams as well as Arup’s global transport modelling community. The team supports complex, high-profile transport projects that help create more sustainable and resilient transport networks.

This opportunity is aimed at ambitious transport modellers who want to take on challenging work, strengthen their strategic modelling expertise and expand their technical range. The role involves using data, modelling tools and innovative approaches to solve practical transport problems. You will work alongside senior modellers and project managers, contributing to both project delivery and bid work through strategic model development, forecasting, scenario testing and scheme appraisal. The position covers the full modelling lifecycle, from data analysis and model building through to reporting, visualisation and client-facing work. There is also scope to collaborate with colleagues in other disciplines and locations, including support for projects elsewhere in the UK and overseas when needed.

What you will do

  • Build and develop strategic transport models to support major transport projects and bids.
  • Use data analysis, modelling techniques and creative methods to tackle real transport planning and modelling challenges.
  • Forecast future transport conditions and test different mitigation measures and scenarios.
  • Assess transport schemes and help determine their likely impacts.
  • Work through the complete modelling process, from data preparation and model development to reporting, visualisation and discussion with clients.
  • Partner with senior transport modellers and project managers to contribute to project work and bid submissions.
  • Work with colleagues across different disciplines, offices and regions, including support for UK and international projects where required.
  • Prepare technical notes and reports that clearly explain modelling methods, assumptions and results.

What Arup is looking for

  • Previous experience in transport modelling, ideally across highway, public transport and/or multimodal modelling work.
  • Practical experience using one or more of VISUM, SATURN, CUBE or MATSim, including model development, calibration and validation.
  • Good knowledge of TAG requirements, forecasting approaches and scenario testing.
  • Strong data analysis skills and the ability to turn complex results into clear written outputs.
  • Experience producing reports and technical notes to a high standard, with careful attention to presentation quality.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively both on your own and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • A collaborative approach and an interest in working with both people and technical tools.
  • The role is intended for someone who already has transport modelling experience and wants to continue developing strategic modelling capability in a supportive environment.
