Category General Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location Birmingham

You will join Arup’s Transport Consulting team, working in a collaborative and inventive environment that sits at the centre of the organisation’s transport planning and modelling work. The wider transport planning business operates across the UK and internationally, and the team works closely with multidisciplinary colleagues and the global transport modelling community inside Arup. The work supports a broad mix of complex, high-profile transport projects that contribute to more sustainable and resilient transport networks.

This opportunity is for an experienced and motivated transport modeller who wants to work on demanding schemes and use data, modelling and modern methods to solve real transport challenges. The position involves close collaboration with senior modellers and project managers, with involvement in both project delivery and bid work. You will help create strategic transport models, forecast future conditions, test mitigation options, and assess schemes. The role covers the full modelling process, from analysing data and developing models through to producing reports, creating visual outputs, and engaging with clients. There may also be opportunities to support work in other parts of the UK and internationally.

The role is a strong fit for someone who wants to deepen their strategic modelling expertise, broaden their technical capabilities, and develop their career in a supportive team. Arup emphasises individuality, shared values, and connection across diverse experiences and perspectives, and the work is intended to be socially useful and meaningful for both the organisation and the communities it serves.

What you will do

  • Build and apply strategic transport models to support major transport projects and bids.
  • Use transport data, modelling tools, and innovative approaches to tackle real-world planning and modelling issues.
  • Forecast future transport conditions and test different scenarios to understand the effect of proposed changes or mitigation measures.
  • Carry out scheme assessment work as part of the modelling and appraisal process.
  • Contribute across the full modelling lifecycle, including data analysis, model development, reporting, and visualisation.
  • Work alongside senior transport modellers and project managers to deliver project outputs.
  • Collaborate with colleagues from other disciplines and locations across the UK and beyond.
  • Support client engagement by helping explain modelling findings clearly and professionally.
  • Produce technical notes and reports that are well presented and easy to follow.

What the team is looking for

  • Previous experience in transport modelling, ideally across highways, public transport, and/or multimodal models.
  • Practical experience using one or more of VISUM, SATURN, CUBE, or MATSim.
  • Experience with model development, calibration, and validation.
  • Understanding of TAG requirements, forecasting, and scenario testing.
  • Strong data analysis skills and confidence working with modelling outputs.
  • Ability to write clear technical reports and notes to a high standard.
  • Good presentation skills and attention to detail in written work.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • A desire to grow strategic modelling skills and develop further within a collaborative environment.

This position is intended for someone with existing transport modelling experience who is ready to take on more challenging work and continue building technical depth. The team values people who enjoy working with both data and colleagues, and who can contribute effectively in a fast-moving project environment.
