Category Healthcare Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location Newcastle

This opportunity is with a long-established, independent veterinary practice that has been serving its local community for more than a century. The team is looking to add an experienced veterinary surgeon who either has a mixed-practice background with a strong small-animal interest or prefers to work in small animal practice only. The practice is known for being supportive, well organised and team-focused, with vets and nurses who work closely together and take pride in delivering excellent clinical care.

The role is based in Newcastle upon Tyne, in the North East of England, an area that offers a strong balance between work and lifestyle. The location gives easy access to transport connections, city amenities, countryside and the coast, making it a practical option for someone relocating or simply wanting a better day-to-day balance.

What the role involves

  • Working as part of a large, experienced clinical team in a respected independent practice.
  • Providing high-quality veterinary care across a mixed caseload, with the main emphasis on small animals.
  • For the mixed role, the caseload is expected to be around 80% small animal, 10% equine and 10% farm work.
  • There is also scope for the position to be offered as small-animal-only if that is the preferred fit.
  • No sole-charge on-call is required.
  • On-call duties include one night per week, with support from another vet.
  • The weekend rota consists of one full weekend on-call in every six weeks.
  • When a full weekend is worked, the following week is free from on-call duties and a Friday or Monday is also given off to create a long weekend.
  • One Saturday morning is worked in every three, with one of those Saturdays falling within the full weekend rota cycle.
  • Bank holiday cover is shared evenly across the team.
  • Part-time working is available for suitable candidates, ideally from a minimum of two full days per week plus rota participation.

What the practice is looking for

  • An experienced veterinary surgeon who is comfortable working in either a mixed-practice setting with a small-animal bias or in a small-animal-only role.
  • A full driving licence is essential.
  • Someone who enjoys being part of a collaborative team and contributing to a positive working environment.
  • A candidate who wants to join a permanent role in a practice that values good medicine, mutual support and long-term retention.
  • Applicants considering part-time work are welcome, provided they can meet the minimum weekly commitment and rota requirements.

Pay and package

  • Salary is competitive and depends on experience.
  • For an experienced vet, the package can be adapted to include a car, fuel card and accommodation where needed.
  • At least six weeks of annual leave is included, along with an additional day off for the employee’s birthday.
  • There is a six-month review, with a salary increase if probation is completed successfully.
  • A 12-month review follows, with another salary increase and bonus-related earnings.
  • After the first year, annual salary reviews continue.
  • A profit-sharing scheme becomes available after the one-year review.
  • RCVS and VDS fees are covered.
  • Visa sponsorship and funding are available.
  • The practice offers a generous CPD allowance and actively encourages ongoing professional development.
  • Internal CPD sessions are held regularly.
  • A workplace pension is provided.
  • BUPA healthcare cover is included.
  • Employees receive discounted pet treatment after completing six months of probation.
  • Full sick pay is available after one year of service.
