Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location London

This opportunity is with a growing engineering business in the commercial marine sector that develops and integrates specialist equipment for large vessels operating around the world. The company is looking for a Systems Engineer focused on electrical, control and instrumentation work to help deliver complex marine technology from design through to commissioning and ongoing support.

The position is aimed at someone who enjoys practical EC&I engineering and wants to work across hardware, controls, integration and testing. It is not intended to be a role centred mainly on documentation. The work spans system architecture, engineering drawings, component selection, supplier coordination, testing, commissioning support and fault investigation, all within a multidisciplinary environment.

What you will do

  • Develop and integrate electrical, control and instrumentation systems for specialist marine equipment fitted to large vessels.
  • Contribute to the overall system architecture and help define how the equipment is structured and connected.
  • Prepare and maintain electrical schematics, cable and termination diagrams, and other hardware-related engineering documentation.
  • Support the choice of hardware, sensors and commercial off-the-shelf components used in the equipment package.
  • Review supplier technical information and work with external partners to make sure components and subassemblies are suitable for the project.
  • Assist with product testing and provide support during commissioning as systems are brought into service.
  • Produce interface documentation and support communications-related aspects of the system.
  • Take part in compliance activities and help ensure the equipment meets the necessary engineering and marine requirements.
  • Investigate faults and support troubleshooting for equipment already installed on vessels.
  • Work closely with electrical, controls, systems engineering, supplier and product teams to deliver a robust integrated solution.
  • Support the equipment throughout its lifecycle, from initial design and development through testing, commissioning and in-service operation.

What the employer is looking for

  • Experience in electrical, control and instrumentation engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical schematics, cable diagrams, termination diagrams, panel documentation or similar technical drawings.
  • Background in system integration, testing, commissioning or fault-finding.
  • Experience selecting hardware, sensors or other COTS equipment.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication methods such as Ethernet, Modbus, Profibus, NMEA or similar protocols.
  • Ability to read and assess technical documentation and work effectively with suppliers.
  • Confidence working across several engineering disciplines in a collaborative team setting.
  • Experience in marine, offshore, shipbuilding, industrial plant, process automation or another highly regulated engineering environment.
  • Knowledge of marine standards or classification organisations such as DNV, ABS or Lloyd’s Register would be helpful.
  • Additional useful exposure includes functional safety, hazardous areas, FMEA, AutoCAD, EPLAN, MATLAB, Simulink or Python.
  • The role is particularly suitable for someone who wants a practical EC&I engineering position rather than a mainly paperwork-based one.

Why this role may appeal to you

  • You will work on sophisticated engineering products that bring together electrical design, controls, instrumentation and systems integration.
  • You will be involved across the full product journey, from concept and development through to testing, commissioning and support in service.
  • You will gain exposure to equipment used in demanding marine conditions on vessels worldwide.
  • The role offers hybrid working.
  • There may be occasional travel depending on project requirements.

Location and team context

The role is based in the South of England and sits within a growing engineering team supporting commercial marine technology. You will be working alongside electrical, controls, systems and product specialists, as well as suppliers, to deliver integrated equipment for real operating environments.
