This rotating internship is designed for vets who want a highly structured year of clinical development in a supportive referral-hospital setting. The programme places a strong emphasis on hands-on learning, specialist exposure and long-term career progression, with opportunities to build experience across a wide range of disciplines while working alongside recognised experts in the field.
What the internship involves
Interns move through several specialist areas during the programme, giving broad exposure to advanced veterinary practice. The rotation includes internal medicine, surgery, anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging, oncology, emergency and critical care, neurology, cardiology, ophthalmology and dentistry. This is intended to provide a rounded clinical foundation and help participants explore different career directions.
As part of the role, interns are embedded in a large referral network and work within a collaborative community of rotating interns and residents. The environment is described as supportive and development-focused, with direct access to multidisciplinary specialist teams and practical involvement in diagnostics, surgery and patient care from the outset.
Training, mentoring and development
The internship includes a substantial education and support package. Each intern receives one-to-one mentoring from trained mentors, regular review meetings with the Internship Director and the Linnaeus Internships Lead, and a detailed induction at the start of the programme.
Teaching is delivered through a tailored programme that includes small-group seminars, weekly clinical teaching, monthly film-reading sessions, clinical reasoning rounds, and ongoing workshops covering professional skills and wellbeing. Interns also complete a year-long research training course, with support to undertake clinical research during the programme.
The role also includes emergency care training through RECOVER online certification in both basic and advanced life support. In addition, interns are supported with career planning, including workshops on CV preparation, interview technique and longer-term career development.
Research and progression opportunities
The programme is intended to open routes into residencies, discipline-specific internships, advanced general practice and academia. The employer highlights a strong progression record, noting that many interns who want to specialise move on to further specialist training posts.
There are also opportunities to present research at international conferences and to publish in peer-reviewed journals. All rotating interns are enrolled onto the CertAVP, and the wider network offers access to more than 130 specialist pathway internship and residency posts, as well as possible progression into advanced roles within primary care practices.
Where the roles are based
For the Summer 2026 intake, opportunities are available at several hospitals, including Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists, Eastcott Referrals, Northwest Veterinary Specialists and Southfields Veterinary Specialists.
Who the employer is looking for
Applicants must be registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and have at least one to two years of experience in small animal practice. The employer also requires completion of the RCVS Veterinary Graduate Development Programme, or that the applicant is at a stage where VetGDP completion is not needed. Applications will not be accepted from candidates who have not completed VetGDP or are not close to completing it.
Pay, contract and working arrangement
The internship is a full-time, fixed-term position based in Solihull, United Kingdom, with work connected to the participating hospital sites. The salary is described as attractive, and the page specifies a competitive annual rate of £37,100, plus benefits.
