This Graduate Teaching Assistant position sits within the James Watt School of Engineering and is part of a structured teaching programme designed to support an excellent student experience. What the role involves

• Helping to plan, organise, and deliver undergraduate teaching activities.
• Taking part in a range of teaching and assessment tasks for undergraduate subjects.
• Handling course administration to agreed deadlines, including communicating information clearly, marking work, carrying out assessments, and providing prompt, constructive feedback.
• Supporting the creation and improvement of teaching materials so that they match the intended learning outcomes and are delivered effectively.
• Using learning technologies to improve teaching, organisation, feedback, and assessment, including blended and online delivery through Moodle and other digital tools.
• Applying specialist subject knowledge in a way that supports both individuals and groups, using an inclusive and evidence-based approach that encourages participation and successful learning.
• Taking part in the full assessment process using different methods, including oral assessment, and giving feedback that is timely, relevant, and helpful to students.
• Supporting student projects, dissertations, and practical work by advising on skills, methods, and techniques, while responding appropriately to a wide range of learner support needs.
• Taking part in continuing professional development activities where appropriate.
• Carrying out any other reasonable duties requested by the Head of School.
• Contributing to the University’s international profile in line with its strategic plan.

What the university is looking for

• Applicants must be current University of Glasgow students and must have received the vacancy number from their Local School Administrator before applying.
• You should hold an honours degree at SCQF Level 10 in a relevant subject area, or have equivalent expertise in a related field, along with an understanding of the principles of teaching, learning, and assessment.
• You must be registered for, and actively working towards, either a PhD (MPhil/PhD) or a PGT qualification in a relevant subject.
• Strong expertise in the subject area is required.
• Experience of teaching or supporting undergraduate or postgraduate learners is expected, whether in person, online, or through distance learning.
• Experience of supervising, mentoring, or teaching students in practical or active learning settings is important.
• Relevant administrative experience, such as student support or course administration, is needed.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills are required.
• You should be comfortable using IT systems and software packages that support teaching and learning.
• You need to be able to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
• You must be able to work to deadlines and manage tasks within required timescales.
• The role also requires commitment to the University’s published values and professional behaviours.
