Graduate Teaching Assistant – School of Mathematics Statistics Overview

This role sits within the School of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Glasgow and is intended for a current University of Glasgow student who has been issued a vacancy number by their Local School Administrator. The post is part of the GTA and Demonstrator category and is based in Glasgow.

Role purpose

Working within an established teaching programme, the postholder will help deliver a high-quality student experience by supporting teaching, assessment, and administration, mainly at undergraduate level. The role is designed to strengthen students’ understanding of core course content and help them identify the key learning points from teaching materials.

What you will do

• Support the planning, organisation, and delivery of undergraduate teaching.
• Carry out teaching and assessment activities for undergraduate subjects.
• Complete course administration tasks within set deadlines, including sharing information, marking work, assessing students, and providing constructive feedback promptly.
• Help develop teaching resources so that the materials and delivery methods align with the intended learning outcomes.
• Use digital learning tools to improve teaching, course management, feedback, and assessment, including blended and online delivery through Moodle and other IT-based resources.
• Use your subject knowledge to teach in ways that suit both individual learners and groups, with an inclusive and evidence-informed approach that supports participation and achievement.
• Take part in the assessment process using a range of methods, including oral assessment, and provide feedback that is timely, effective, and relevant to student learning.
• Support student projects, dissertations, and practical work by advising on skills, methods, and techniques, while responding appropriately to varied student support needs.
• Engage in continuing professional development as required.
• Carry out any other reasonable tasks requested by the Head of School.
• Help enhance the University’s international profile in line with its strategic plan.

What the University is looking for

• An honours degree at SCQF Level 10 in a relevant subject area, or equivalent expertise in a related field, along with an understanding of teaching, learning, and assessment principles.
• Current registration for, and active progress toward, a PhD (MPhil/PhD) or a PGT qualification in a relevant discipline.
• Strong expertise in the subject area.
• Experience teaching or supporting undergraduate or postgraduate students in person, online, or through distance learning.
• Experience supervising, mentoring, or teaching students in practical or active learning settings.
• Relevant administrative experience, such as student support or course administration.
• Excellent communication and presentation abilities.
• Confidence using IT systems and software packages that support teaching and learning.
• Ability to work effectively on your own and as part of a team.
• Ability to meet deadlines and manage work accordingly.
• A commitment to the University’s published values and expected professional behaviours.
