Graduate Teaching Assistant – James Watt School of Engineering Overview

This role sits within a defined teaching programme and is focused on helping deliver an excellent learning experience for students, mainly at undergraduate level. The post holder will support teaching, assessment, and administration, helping students deepen their understanding of key course content and draw out the main learning points from teaching materials.

What you will do

• Help plan, organise, and deliver undergraduate teaching.
• Carry out teaching and assessment activities for undergraduate subjects.
• Manage course administration tasks within set deadlines, including communicating information, marking, assessing, and providing prompt, constructive feedback.
• Assist in developing teaching materials so that the content and delivery approach match the intended learning outcomes.
• Use learning technologies to improve teaching, course organisation, feedback, and assessment, including blended and online delivery through tools such as Moodle and other digital resources.
• Use your subject expertise to teach in ways that meet the needs of different learners, taking an inclusive and evidence-based approach that supports participation and achievement.
• Take part in the assessment process using a range of methods, including oral assessment, and give feedback that is timely, useful, and supportive of student learning.
• Support student projects, dissertations, and practical work by advising on skills, methods, and techniques, while responding appropriately to varied learner support needs.
• Take part in continuing professional development as appropriate.
• Carry out any other reasonable duties requested by the Head of School.
• Contribute to strengthening the University’s international profile in line with its strategic plan.

What you need

• An honours degree at SCQF Level 10 relevant to the teaching area, or equivalent expertise in a relevant field, along with an understanding of the principles of teaching, learning, and assessment.
• Registration for, and active progress toward, a PhD (MPhil/PhD) or a PGT qualification in a relevant subject.
• Deep knowledge of the subject area.
• Experience teaching or supporting undergraduate or postgraduate students in face-to-face, online, or distance-learning settings.
• Experience supervising, mentoring, or teaching students in practical or active learning environments.
• Relevant administrative experience, such as student support or course administration.
• Excellent communication and presentation ability.
• Confidence using IT and software tools that support teaching and learning.
• Ability to work effectively on your own and as part of a team.
• Ability to meet deadlines and work within required timescales.
• A commitment to the University’s published values and professional behaviours.
