This role is for an experienced Technical Architect who will provide senior technical leadership across a mature enterprise application estate. The focus is on keeping the platform stable while also supporting ongoing maintenance, enhancement delivery, and modernization work. The position sits within a complex environment where architecture decisions, production support, cloud operations, DevSecOps practices, and long-term roadmap planning all need to be coordinated carefully.

The working model is hybrid. Day-to-day work will be split between company offices, client locations, and home, depending on the needs of the role and the business. Full-time home working is not available for this position.

What you will do

  • Lead the technical direction for the application landscape and own the overall architecture and roadmap.
  • Protect architectural consistency across production, non-production, and integration environments.
  • Review and approve solution designs for enhancements, change requests, and platform upgrades.
  • Push for simplification, standardization, and the reduction of technical debt across the platform.
  • Define architecture principles and engineering standards, then ensure they are followed.
  • Provide practical technical guidance to both delivery teams and support teams.
  • Help keep business-critical applications running reliably and support their ongoing operation.
  • Investigate repeated production issues, identify root causes, and shape durable remediation plans.
  • Recommend modernization paths for older components and improve the sustainability of the support model.
  • Support major incidents and problem investigations by giving architectural input and helping assess root-cause analysis.
  • Make sure permanent fixes are implemented and that incident, problem, and change processes are properly supported.
  • Ensure the platform meets expectations for availability, resilience, disaster recovery, and business continuity.
  • Improve monitoring, observability, alerting, and automation so operations become more proactive and efficient.
  • Work with business and product stakeholders to turn requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Support estimation, impact assessment, and solution planning for new enhancements.
  • Confirm that new functionality aligns with architecture rules and non-functional requirements.
  • Oversee release readiness and deployment strategy for changes going into the platform.
  • Lead cloud architecture reviews and help optimize the platform.
  • Guide infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and service improvements.
  • Encourage cloud-native approaches where they make sense for the solution.
  • Ensure the platform remains secure, scalable, resilient, and cost-conscious.
  • Promote DevSecOps ways of working and an automation-first mindset.
  • Improve CI/CD maturity, deployment reliability, and release automation.
  • Encourage secure development practices and stronger engineering discipline.
  • Support automated testing, code quality controls, and engineering metrics.
  • Use measurable outcomes to drive ongoing engineering improvement.
  • Make sure the architecture complies with security and compliance requirements.
  • Take part in security reviews, threat assessments, and vulnerability remediation planning.
  • Support audit, governance, and regulatory activities.
  • Embed security-by-design thinking throughout the application lifecycle.

What the role requires

  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS and microservices is essential.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership in architecture or a similarly senior engineering role.
  • Experience making and governing architecture decisions in a complex enterprise setting.
  • Ability to operate across application support, enhancement delivery, cloud operations, and DevSecOps.
  • Background in maintaining and improving business-critical applications.
  • Experience with incident, problem, and change management in production environments.
  • Knowledge of resilience, disaster recovery, business continuity, and operational readiness.
  • Experience with cloud platform engineering, including optimization, upgrades, and migrations.
  • Understanding of secure engineering, compliance, and security-by-design practices.
  • Ability to work effectively with delivery teams, support teams, and business or product stakeholders.
  • Experience improving CI/CD, deployment automation, testing, and engineering quality controls.
  • Comfort working in a hybrid arrangement rather than a fully remote setup.
  • This is a permanent role for an experienced professional based in London, UK.
  • The employer says that candidates who declare a disability and meet the minimum essential criteria will be offered an interview if they opt in during the application process.

What you can expect from the employer
