Arup is looking for Fire Engineers to join its UK team and contribute to a growing portfolio of important, high-impact work. The role sits within a large fire safety community and offers the chance to work on projects that range from major heritage and cultural buildings to innovative construction and research-led fire safety initiatives. The team’s work goes beyond simply meeting code requirements: it includes advanced fire safety research, the creation of internal digital tools, and collaboration with universities and industry partners to address emerging risks and improve safety for people who are most vulnerable.
What the role involves
In this position, you will support Arup’s fire safety team in delivering fire engineering services for clients. You will be part of a network of more than 400 fire safety specialists spread across 20 offices, and your work will involve close collaboration with colleagues from fire safety and other disciplines. The company’s hybrid working approach is designed to support different needs while still meeting the demands of the business, clients, and communities.
The role is intended for someone who either is already progressing toward Chartered Engineer status or has a strong ambition to achieve it. If you are working toward chartership, Arup says it will provide support to help you succeed.
Main responsibilities
- Use fire science in practical project work by applying engineering methods such as defining goals and objectives, assessing buildings and hazards, and developing design fire scenarios.
- Apply a total fire safety mindset from the earliest client brief through design and construction, taking account of the wider social and technical context and anticipating issues that can arise at different stages of a project.
- Research, interpret, and apply relevant legislation and design guidance on live projects.
- Develop fire strategies in partnership with the design team and other relevant stakeholders.
- Contribute to the delivery of fire safety engineering services for clients as part of a collaborative team.
- Work interactively with fire safety colleagues and multidisciplinary teams across Arup’s wider office network.
- Help deliver work that has practical value for clients and communities, including projects with cultural, heritage, and sustainability significance.
What Arup is looking for
- A qualification in a relevant area, such as fire engineering, another engineering discipline, or an architecture-related subject.
- Previous experience in a fire engineering consultancy or a similar industry environment.
- Knowledge of UK fire-related legislation and guidance, together with awareness of the current regulatory changes and regime.
- Strong report-writing ability and clear communication skills.
- A collaborative, creative, and engaging working style.
- The ability to handle several projects at once while working to tight deadlines and managing competing demands and deliverables.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving, including the ability to develop solutions and draw on others for help or experience when needed.
- Either current progress toward Chartered Engineer status or a strong desire to work toward it.
