Company Name Arup
Job Role Senior Engineer
Qualifications Not Specified
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location London

Arup is seeking a principal-level electrical engineer to join its Science, Industry, Healthcare and Data Centre team in London. This is a permanent opportunity within a creative and collaborative group that works on technically demanding projects for clients across sectors such as data centres, pharmaceuticals, universities, research institutions, and large-scale commercial operators. The team delivers projects globally, including high-voltage substation design, and places strong emphasis on innovation, sustainability, decarbonisation, and high-quality engineering outcomes.

The role sits within Arup’s wider electrical engineering capability, where specialists support buildings, transport infrastructure, and energy, water, and waste utility projects. The successful candidate will become part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers and technicians and will contribute to work that supports the transition to net zero carbon. The position is aimed at someone who already operates as an electrical discipline lead and wants to continue delivering projects while growing into a deeper technical specialist or broader leadership role.

What you will do

  • Take responsibility for electrical and MEP design output on your projects, from the earliest concept stages through to construction and final delivery, while remaining accountable to both project leaders and the electrical discipline.
  • Lead the development of electrical systems and subsystems, coordinating design work with other engineering disciplines and specialist contributors.
  • Produce the technical documentation needed for projects, including drawings, reports, specifications, and calculations.
  • Carry out and coordinate design analysis, working with the team to improve and optimise system performance.
  • Help organise and lead technical resources so that project objectives are achieved.
  • Contribute to the creation and management of the design programme.
  • Act as the electrical discipline representative in internal and external meetings.
  • Support the development of colleagues by offering guidance, training, and feedback, and potentially take on line management responsibilities.
  • Where required, step into a project management role with responsibility for resourcing, commercial delivery, and the overall success of the project.

What Arup is looking for

  • A Chartered or Incorporated Principal Electrical Engineer, or someone with equivalent principal-level capability and experience.
  • Someone who is already acting as an electrical discipline lead and wants to keep delivering projects while developing further as a technical specialist or leader.
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision and to recognise when support or input from others is needed.
  • Strong technical leadership skills, including the ability to manage multi-disciplinary responsibilities within the property business.
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively with engineers and technicians in a team environment.
  • Good communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to build and maintain client relationships.
  • An investigative, curious approach, with interest in exploring new opportunities, methods, and technologies that improve engineering delivery.
  • The ability to delegate work appropriately to more junior colleagues.
  • A willingness to mentor younger engineers and share knowledge and support as needed.
  • The ability to act as an IET mentor and help junior engineers work toward chartership.
  • Comfort working on global projects in an international, multicultural setting.
  • A strong interest in sustainability and in engineering solutions that support the move to net zero carbon.

Rewards and benefits

  • Competitive pay.
  • A benefits package described as one of the strongest in the sector.
  • Private medical cover through the UK Healthcare Plan.
  • Life assurance.
  • Accident insurance.
  • Income protection for long-term disability.
  • Employer-funded core benefits available to permanent staff to support financial, physical, and mental wellbeing.
  • Access to Choice Benefits to help with work-life balance and financial security.
  • Eligibility for the Global Profit Share scheme as a permanent employee.
  • Potential for two profit share payments each year, depending on scheme rules and the firm’s financial performance.
