This is a practical embedded software engineering role focused on the full journey of a product, from early development through integration and deployment. The work combines firmware, electronics, and system-level troubleshooting, and the end result is software and hardware that is used directly in vehicles. The position is suited to someone who enjoys taking ownership, working across disciplines, and seeing their engineering make a real-world impact.
What you will do
- Write embedded firmware in C for vehicle-related products and systems.
- Develop and support CAN bus communication functionality.
- Produce electronic schematics and contribute to PCB layout activities.
- Test and debug issues at both the hardware and software levels.
- Help deploy systems into live environments and assist with fault-finding when issues arise.
- Feed into new feature development and ongoing product improvements.
- Work across the full product lifecycle rather than focusing on only one stage of development.
What the role involves
The role is based in Stafford and is a permanent position with a salary of £40,000 to £55,000. It is described as a hands-on embedded engineering opportunity where you will be involved in firmware development, electronics design, and real-world integration work. The products you help build are deployed directly into vehicles, so the role includes both development and practical support once systems are in use.
What the employer is looking for
- Strong embedded C programming experience.
- Proven experience working directly with CAN bus systems.
- Experience with real embedded products or devices in a practical engineering setting.
- Understanding of electronics design, including schematics and PCB work.
- The ability to work independently and take responsibility for your own work.
- Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Additional experience that would be useful
- Experience with an RTOS, such as FreeRTOS.
- Knowledge of STM32 or similar microcontrollers.
- Experience with ESP32 or comparable platforms.
- Familiarity with Bluetooth Low Energy.
- Knowledge of automotive diagnostics, including OBD-II and UDS.
- Use of Python for automation or engineering tooling.
- Experience with Git or another version control system.
Why this opportunity stands out
- You will work on advanced automotive technology.
- You will be part of a small engineering team with significant impact.
- You will gain exposure to the entire development process.
- You will have genuine ownership of your work and see it used in live systems.
