Bloomberg’s Engineering AI organization is a large group of more than 400 AI specialists building products and features that often depend on original technical breakthroughs. The team is investing heavily in artificial intelligence to improve search, discovery, and workflow experiences using approaches such as transformers, gradient-boosted decision trees, large language models, and dense vector databases. The role sits within this expanding area and is aimed at people who can help deliver innovative AI-driven products for customers.

The broader business focuses on creating a transparent and efficient financial marketplace. Bloomberg’s technology makes news, research, financial data, and analytics across more than 35 million financial instruments searchable, discoverable, and actionable for users in global capital markets. The company has been developing AI applications since 2009 to solve problems that require both high accuracy and low latency. These systems are used to process and organize large volumes of structured and unstructured information, uncover signals, generate analytics across all asset classes, and provide clarity when clients need it most.

In this senior research engineering role, you would contribute to work such as anomaly detection in bond time-series data, dividend forecasting, gas emission estimation, and assessing the financial impact of controversies. The position combines research, engineering, and cross-functional collaboration, with an emphasis on building practical solutions that can be deployed in production.

What you would do

  • Partner with teammates on production systems and produce code that is suitable for live use, including writing, testing, and maintaining it to a high standard.
  • Develop machine learning models and related algorithms by designing them, training them, running experiments, and evaluating their performance.
  • Provide technical leadership by taking ownership of projects that involve multiple teams.
  • Stay informed about the latest AI research and apply new findings to Bloomberg’s models and methods where appropriate.
  • Act as a representative of Bloomberg in scientific forums, industry events, and open-source communities.
  • Share product and research results through documentation, white papers, or publications in leading academic venues.

What the role calls for

  • Practical experience working on machine learning problems, with familiarity in classical machine learning, deep learning, and statistical modeling techniques.
  • A PhD in machine learning, natural language processing, or a related area, or an MSc in computer science, machine learning, mathematics, statistics, engineering, or a similar discipline together with relevant professional experience.
  • Strong capability in software engineering.
  • Good understanding of core computer science concepts such as data structures and algorithms, plus a problem-solving style grounded in data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with engineering peers and non-engineering stakeholders.
  • A history of publishing in top conferences or journals is viewed as a strong advantage.
  • Bloomberg notes that years of experience are only a guideline and that candidates who can demonstrate the right skills will be considered even if their background does not exactly match the stated experience level.
