Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon Overview

Company Name Lloyd & Cowan
Job Role Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon
Qualifications Not Specified
Category Healthcare Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location Leeds

This is a rare opening for a small animal veterinary surgeon to join a highly regarded and well-supported practice team in West Yorkshire, roughly 50 minutes to the west of Leeds. The role is designed for someone who wants the backing of a substantial clinical team, modern facilities, and a varied caseload, while still working in an environment that feels friendly, collaborative, and manageable on a day-to-day basis.

You would become part of a nine-vet small animal team with a wide spread of experience and clinical interests. The practice includes certificate holders in surgery and imaging, as well as experienced medicine vets, qualified RVNs, and a large support team. That mix creates a setting where colleagues can learn from one another, discuss cases openly, ask questions, and keep developing clinically without feeling unsupported.

What the role involves

  • Carrying out the day-to-day duties of a small animal veterinary surgeon within a busy general practice environment.
  • Managing a varied caseload that offers the chance to strengthen broad GP skills while also developing longer-term clinical interests.
  • Working closely with a large, experienced team that includes certificate holders, medicine-focused vets, RVNs, and support staff.
  • Taking part in an approximately one-in-eight weekend rota.
  • Contributing to a practice culture that values discussion, teamwork, and ongoing professional development.
  • Using advanced diagnostic and surgical equipment to support high-quality clinical care.
  • Working in a setting where out-of-hours work is handled externally, allowing the team to maintain a healthier balance between work and personal life.

Practice environment and facilities

The practice is purpose-built and exceptionally well equipped, giving the team the tools needed to manage a broad range of cases to a high standard. Facilities include a CT scanner, digital x-ray, ultrasound, an in-house laboratory, dedicated surgical suites, separate inpatient accommodation, and 24/7 onsite nursing support.

The caseload is described as busy and varied, making this a strong fit for someone who wants to continue growing as a well-rounded general practice vet while also having the opportunity to explore specialist interests in the future. Certificates are actively encouraged and supported.

Location and lifestyle

The position is based in the Keighley area of West Yorkshire, giving easy access to the Yorkshire countryside and the Dales while also remaining well connected to Leeds and Manchester for restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. The area is also noted as being more affordable than many larger cities, which can make day-to-day living costs go further.

What is offered

  • A four-day working week.
  • An excellent weekend rota of around one in eight.
  • Eight weeks of annual leave, including bank holidays.
  • Strong support for continuing professional development, including funding.
  • Active encouragement and support for certificate study.
  • Payment of professional fees.
  • Visa sponsorship.
  • A salary in the range of £40,000 to £65,000 depending on experience.

Who this role suits

This opportunity is aimed at a veterinary surgeon who wants a genuinely supportive team, access to advanced facilities, and a role that allows continued clinical growth without sacrificing work-life balance. It is not suitable for new graduates, and the employer is ideally looking for someone with at least two years of UK experience.
