Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon Overview

Company Name Lloyd & Cowan
Job Role Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon
Qualifications Not Specified
Category Healthcare Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location Leeds

This is a rare opening for a small animal veterinary surgeon to join a highly regarded and well-supported practice team in West Yorkshire, roughly 50 minutes to the west of Leeds. The practice is large enough to provide real clinical support, modern equipment, and a varied caseload, while still keeping a friendly and collaborative atmosphere in everyday work.

You would be joining a nine-vet small animal team with a wide mix of experience and clinical interests. The group includes certificate holders in surgery and imaging, as well as vets with strong medicine backgrounds, supported by a substantial team of qualified RVNs and other support staff. This creates an environment where questions are welcomed, cases are discussed openly, and professional development is encouraged rather than leaving people to manage everything alone.

What the role involves

  • Working as part of a busy small animal general practice team and contributing to a broad and varied caseload.
  • Providing day-to-day veterinary care for small animal patients while continuing to grow as a confident all-round GP vet.
  • Collaborating closely with experienced colleagues across surgery, imaging, medicine, nursing, and support roles.
  • Taking part in the weekend rota, which is set at one in eight.
  • Using advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities as part of routine clinical work.
  • Helping maintain a culture of case discussion, shared learning, and ongoing clinical development.
  • Building on existing interests and, if desired, progressing toward certificate-level study with support from the practice.

Practice environment and facilities

The practice is purpose-built and exceptionally well equipped, giving the team access to a strong clinical toolkit and a comfortable working environment. Facilities include a CT scanner, digital x-ray, ultrasound, an in-house laboratory, dedicated surgical suites, separate inpatient accommodation, and 24/7 onsite nursing cover.

Out-of-hours work is handled externally, which means the in-house team can switch off properly at the end of the day and enjoy a healthier work-life balance. The caseload is described as busy and varied, making this a strong fit for someone who wants to keep developing clinically while still working in a supportive setting.

Location and lifestyle

The position is based in the Keighley area, offering easy access to the Yorkshire countryside and the Dales, while also remaining well connected to Leeds and Manchester for restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. The area is also noted for being more affordable than many larger cities, which can make day-to-day living go further.

What is on offer

  • A four-day working week.
  • A weekend rota of one in eight.
  • Eight weeks of annual leave, including bank holidays.
  • Strong support for continuing professional development, including funding.
  • Encouragement and backing for certificate study.
  • Payment of professional fees.
  • Visa sponsorship.
  • Salary in the range of £40,000 to £65,000, depending on experience.

Who this role suits

This opportunity is aimed at an experienced small animal vet who wants to work in a genuinely supportive team, have access to advanced facilities, and continue developing clinically while maintaining a sensible work-life balance. It is not suitable for new graduates, and the practice is ideally looking for someone with at least two years of UK experience.
