This is an opportunity to join a long-established, proudly independent veterinary practice in Newcastle upon Tyne that has served its community for more than a century. The practice is looking for an experienced veterinary surgeon to join a large and knowledgeable team of vets and nurses in a workplace that is described as supportive, well organised, and focused on delivering excellent medicine. The role can suit either a mixed practitioner with a small-animal bias or a vet who wants to work in a small animal-only position.
The practice is based in North East England, giving easy access to city life, transport connections, countryside, and the coast. It is presented as a strong option for someone relocating or for a vet seeking a better balance between work and personal life while still being part of a busy and respected clinical team.
What the role involves
- Joining a collaborative team of experienced veterinary surgeons and nurses in an independent practice environment.
- Providing day-to-day clinical care with a strong emphasis on high standards of medicine and patient welfare.
- Working mainly with small animals, with the mixed role including a smaller amount of equine and farm work.
- For the mixed caseload, the approximate balance is 80% small animal, 10% equine, and 10% farm.
- Taking part in a rota that includes one night on-call each week, with another vet available for support.
- Sharing weekend duties on a rota of one full weekend on call in every six.
- Receiving no on-call duties in the week after a full weekend on call, along with either a Friday or Monday off to create a long weekend.
- Covering one Saturday morning in three, with one of those Saturdays included within the full weekend rota.
- Sharing bank holiday cover equally across the team.
- Working without sole-charge on-call responsibilities.
- Considering part-time working for suitable applicants, provided they can offer at least two full days per week and contribute to the rota.
What the practice is looking for
- An experienced veterinary surgeon who is comfortable working in either a mixed role with a small-animal focus or a small animal-only post.
- A candidate who holds a full driving licence.
- Someone who is happy to work within a rota that includes nights, weekends, and bank holidays.
- A vet who values teamwork, mutual support, and a positive practice culture.
- A professional who wants to be part of a long-standing independent practice and contribute to high-quality care.
- Part-time applicants are welcome if they can commit to the minimum weekly availability and rota participation required.
Pay, rewards, and support
- A competitive salary that depends on experience.
- For experienced vets, the overall package can be adjusted to include a car, fuel card, and accommodation where needed.
- At least six weeks of annual leave, plus an additional day off for the employee’s birthday.
- A salary review after six months, with an increase following successful probation.
- A further review at 12 months, with another pay rise and bonus-related earnings.
- Ongoing annual salary reviews after the first year.
- A profit-sharing scheme available after the one-year review.
- RCVS and VDS membership costs covered.
- Visa sponsorship and funding available.
- A generous CPD allowance, with continuing professional development actively encouraged and supported.
- Regular internal CPD opportunities.
- A workplace pension.
- BUPA healthcare cover.
- Discounted treatment for pets after six months’ probation.
- Full sick pay after one year of service.
