This is a senior pavement engineering opportunity within Arupâs UKIMEA region, based in Nottingham. The role is suited to an experienced engineer at Senior or Associate level who can combine strong technical pavement design capability with leadership, project management, client engagement, and strategic thinking. The position sits within a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment and focuses on delivering pavement solutions for highways, airfields, and site development schemes.
What the role involves
- Leading pavement engineering work across infrastructure projects, with responsibility for both technical delivery and project coordination.
- Managing pavement projects from a delivery and leadership perspective, ensuring work is progressed effectively and meets required standards.
- Working closely with internal and external clients to provide design liaison and maintain clear communication throughout project delivery.
- Building productive client relationships and helping to strengthen long-term partnerships.
- Supporting the development of the team, including contributing to its growth, capability, and future direction.
- Bringing strategic awareness to the role, including an understanding of market pressures, industry challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
- Contributing to commercial, financial, and contractual aspects of work where relevant.
- Helping with business development activity and bid preparation to secure new work.
- Collaborating with colleagues in multi-professional design teams to deliver integrated pavement solutions.
- Ensuring design work is delivered under pressure and to tight deadlines when required.
- Using practical site experience to support project delivery and oversee works on site.
What the team is looking for
- A civil engineering degree.
- Substantial, proven experience in pavement engineering and design for infrastructure projects.
- Experience at a level that can support senior technical leadership, team management, and project responsibility.
- Certification as a Pavement Engineer in accordance with CD 226.
- Professional membership with an appropriate institution such as ICE or CIHT.
- Hands-on experience with analytical pavement design, pavement investigation, evaluation techniques, and pavement strengthening design.
- Experience contributing to or developing pavement standards, along with awareness of new pavement technologies and innovations.
- Strong knowledge of pavement design principles covering flexible, rigid, and composite pavement types.
- The ability to assess design strategies and pavement options for different budget scenarios, including both new build and maintenance work.
- Evidence of overseeing site works and applying that experience to design and delivery decisions.
- The ability to take full responsibility for pavement project management and design delivery.
- Excellent planning, organisation, and time management skills.
- Confidence working under pressure and meeting strict deadlines.
- The ability to develop successful working relationships with clients quickly and effectively.
- Experience in commercial, financial, and contractual matters would be beneficial.
- A strong track record of working effectively as part of a team.
- Flexibility and willingness to travel away from your usual base when needed.
