This is a senior pavement engineering position based in Nottingham within Arupâs UKIMEA region. The role is aimed at an experienced engineer who can combine strong technical pavement design capability with leadership, project management, client engagement, and strategic thinking. It sits within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment and involves contributing to infrastructure work across highways, airfields, and site development schemes.
What the role involves
- Leading pavement engineering activity at senior or associate level, with a strong focus on both technical delivery and management responsibilities.
- Managing pavement projects from a delivery and coordination perspective, ensuring work is progressed effectively and to a high standard.
- Providing design leadership and technical liaison across internal teams and external client groups.
- Working within multi-professional design teams and helping align pavement solutions with wider project objectives.
- Supporting and developing client relationships, with the ability to build trust and maintain productive long-term connections.
- Contributing to business development activity, including bidding and helping secure future work.
- Overseeing design delivery for pavement schemes and taking responsibility for project outcomes.
- Applying site experience to support the successful execution of works and the practical implementation of design solutions.
- Bringing a forward-looking perspective to the team, helping strengthen existing capability and support future growth.
Technical focus
- The work covers pavement design for infrastructure projects, with particular exposure to highways, airfields, and site development.
- The role requires experience in analytical pavement design and familiarity with pavement investigation, evaluation methods, and strengthening design.
- You should be comfortable working with different pavement forms, including flexible, rigid, and composite pavements.
- Experience developing pavement standards and understanding new pavement innovations is important.
- The role also calls for the ability to assess design strategies and pavement options against different budget scenarios for both new construction and maintenance work.
What Arup is looking for
- A Civil Engineering degree.
- Substantial practical experience in pavement design for infrastructure projects.
- Certification as a Pavement Engineer in line with CD 226.
- Membership of a relevant professional institution, such as ICE or CIHT.
- Strong enthusiasm for pavement engineering and a commitment to developing the team and its clients.
- Experience at a level where you can take ownership of pavement project management and design delivery.
- Commercial, financial, and contractual experience would be beneficial.
- A proven ability to maintain and grow professional relationships.
- Confidence working under pressure, meeting demanding deadlines, and managing your own time, priorities, and organisation effectively.
- The flexibility to travel away from your usual base when required.
