The role sits within a multidisciplinary group of more than 110 engineers and technicians across both locations, and the work spans projects in the UK and internationally. The team contributes to a wide variety of building and infrastructure schemes, including rail, science and industry, higher education, residential, and healthcare developments, often with a strong sustainability focus and technically demanding design challenges.
The organisation describes its purpose as creating a better world through collaborative, socially useful work. In this role, you would be part of a culture that values individuality, shared values, and diverse perspectives, while contributing to projects delivered alongside leading architects and other specialists. The work is intended for someone who enjoys technically challenging assignments and wants to help shape innovative buildings and building systems.
What you would do
- Take responsibility for leading the mechanical building services design process on complex projects, from early-stage strategy through to detailed delivery.
- Develop system strategies for building services and coordinate those strategies with project teams, consultants, and other stakeholders.
- Lead thermal comfort and environmental analysis for buildings and internal spaces, helping to ensure the design performs well for occupants and meets project goals.
- Oversee the preparation of models, drawings, reports, and technical specifications, making sure the work is delivered to the required standard, within budget, and on schedule.
- Work closely with architects, engineers, technicians, and other disciplines to integrate mechanical systems into wider building designs.
- Supervise and support colleagues across disciplines, contributing to a team environment where knowledge is shared and people are developed.
- Contribute to projects in sectors such as rail infrastructure, science and industry, universities, and complex residential and healthcare buildings.
- Apply experience with renewable technologies and suitability assessments as part of delivering sustainable and low-carbon building solutions.
- Use energy modelling tools, including IES, to support analysis and design decisions where required.
- Contribute to commercial activities such as resource planning, budget management, fee estimation, and proposal preparation.
- Help deliver work that is technically robust, commercially aware, and aligned with the organisation’s wider purpose and values.
What the employer is looking for

- Strong leadership capability, including the ability to guide, train, and give constructive feedback to others.
- A clear interest in sustainable building design, particularly in relation to energy performance and carbon reduction.
- Experience delivering complex projects and incorporating renewable technologies and suitability assessments into design work.
- Practical familiarity with energy modelling software such as IES.
- Commercial awareness, including the ability to plan resources, manage budgets, and support fee proposals and other work-winning activity.
- Experience in the Science, Industry and Technology sector at detailed design stage would be especially valuable.
- Experience on rail buildings across all design assurance levels would also be highly regarded.
- The ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment and coordinate with a wide range of project stakeholders.
