Bloomberg’s Engineering AI organization includes a large community of more than 400 AI specialists who are building products and features that often call for original technical advances. The team is investing heavily in artificial intelligence to improve search, discovery, and workflow experiences using approaches such as transformers, gradient boosted decision trees, large language models, and dense vector databases. The role sits within this expanding group and focuses on helping deliver innovative AI-powered products for customers.

The company describes its broader mission as supporting a transparent and efficient financial marketplace through technology that makes news, research, financial data, and analytics across more than 35 million financial instruments searchable, discoverable, and actionable in global capital markets. Bloomberg has been developing AI applications for these kinds of problems since 2009, with an emphasis on high accuracy and low latency. Its systems are designed to process and organize large volumes of structured and unstructured information so clients can make better decisions, uncover signals, and generate analytics across all asset classes.

What you will do

  • Partner with machine learning and software engineering colleagues to deliver production AI systems and customer-facing features.
  • Write, validate, and maintain code that meets production standards.
  • Design machine learning models, train them, run experiments, and evaluate the results to improve algorithms and solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership by taking ownership of projects that involve multiple teams.
  • Stay informed about the latest AI research and apply relevant new ideas to Bloomberg’s models and methods.
  • Represent the company in scientific and industry conferences, as well as in open-source communities.
  • Share product and research outcomes through documentation, white papers, or publications in respected academic venues.
  • Contribute to advanced initiatives such as anomaly detection in bond time series, dividend forecasting, gas emission estimation, and assessing the financial impact of controversies.

What the role requires

  • Practical experience working on machine learning problems, with familiarity in classical machine learning, deep learning, and statistical modeling techniques.
  • A PhD in machine learning, NLP, or a related field, or an MSc in computer science, machine learning, mathematics, statistics, engineering, or a similar discipline together with relevant professional experience.
  • Strong capability in software engineering.
  • Good understanding of core computer science concepts, especially data structures and algorithms, plus a problem-solving style grounded in data.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineering peers and non-engineering stakeholders.
  • A history of publishing in leading conferences or journals is viewed as a significant advantage.
  • The employer notes that any years-of-experience guidance should be treated as approximate, and that applicants who can demonstrate the required skills are encouraged to apply.

Additional context

The role is based in London and is part of Bloomberg’s Engineering and CTO business area. The posting emphasizes both research and production engineering, so the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to applied AI work that has direct product impact while also engaging with the wider research and technical community.
