Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon Overview
| Company Name | Lloyd & Cowan |
| Job Role | Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon |
| Qualifications | Not Specified |
| Category | Healthcare Jobs |
| Job Type | Full Time |
| Location | Leeds |
This is a rare opening for a small animal veterinary surgeon to join a highly regarded and well-supported practice team in West Yorkshire, roughly 50 minutes to the west of Leeds. The role is designed for someone who wants the backing of a substantial clinical team, access to advanced equipment, and a varied caseload, while still working in a friendly and collaborative environment.
You would become part of a nine-vet small animal team with a broad mix of experience and clinical interests. The practice includes vets with certificates in surgery and imaging, as well as experienced medicine clinicians, supported by a large group of qualified RVNs and other support staff. This creates a setting where questions are welcomed, cases are discussed openly, and ongoing development is encouraged rather than leaving people to manage everything alone.
What the role involves
- Carrying out small animal veterinary work in a busy general practice setting.
- Managing a varied caseload and continuing to develop as a well-rounded GP vet.
- Working closely with a large, experienced clinical team and support staff.
- Taking part in the weekend rota on a one-in-eight basis.
- Using the practice’s advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities as part of everyday clinical work.
- Contributing to a culture of case discussion, shared learning, and professional growth.
- Building on existing interests and, where desired, progressing toward certificate-level development with support from the practice.
Practice environment and facilities
The practice is purpose-built and exceptionally well equipped, giving the team the tools needed to handle a wide range of cases in-house. Facilities include a CT scanner, digital x-ray, ultrasound, an in-house laboratory, dedicated surgical suites, separate inpatient accommodation, and 24/7 nursing cover on site. Out-of-hours work is handled externally, which helps the team maintain a healthier balance between work and personal time.
The caseload is described as busy and varied, making this a strong fit for someone who wants to keep building confidence across general practice while also having room to explore particular clinical interests over time. Certificates are actively supported and encouraged.
Location and lifestyle
The practice is based in Keighley, giving easy access to the Yorkshire countryside and the Dales while also remaining well connected to Leeds and Manchester. That means the role offers a mix of rural surroundings and city access for dining, shopping, and nightlife. The area is also noted as being more affordable than many larger cities, which can make day-to-day living more manageable.
Package and benefits
- A four-day working week.
- A weekend rota of one in eight.
- Eight weeks of annual leave, bank holidays included.
- Strong CPD support with funding available.
- Encouragement and support for certificate study.
- Payment of professional fees.
- Visa sponsorship available.
- Salary in the range of £40,000 to £65,000 depending on experience.
