Staff+ Software Engineer, Developer Productivity Overview

Company Name Anthropic
Job Role Staff+ Software Engineer, Developer Productivity
Qualifications Not Specified
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location London

This role sits within the Infrastructure organization and focuses on the systems that let engineers and researchers at Anthropic develop, build, test, and release software efficiently at scale. The work spans the full developer experience, including the source control and language tooling that support the monorepo, the build and continuous integration systems that keep thousands of daily builds reliable across several cloud providers, and the internal tooling that brings Claude into engineering workflows to speed up development.

The broader infrastructure mission is central to Anthropic’s goal of building AI systems that are reliable, understandable, and steerable. The infrastructure team supports the speed at which new models can be trained, the reliability of safety experiments, and the ability to scale Claude to a very large user base. The company emphasizes that strong infrastructure and frontier AI capabilities are meant to advance together.

What you will do

  • Set the technical strategy and delivery plan for your area, converting team goals into practical execution plans.
  • Define the architecture for the infrastructure you own and ensure the hardest technical challenges are solved, either directly by you or through collaboration and influence.
  • Build distributed infrastructure and shared libraries that are dependable, scalable, and able to support high-volume workloads used by many engineering teams.
  • Own the systems that manage build environments, package distribution, and dependency handling so that builds remain fast and reproducible.
  • Establish and evolve standards, tooling, and frameworks for language ecosystems that improve productivity across both research and production engineering work.
  • Contribute to the developer acceleration stack, including tooling that integrates Claude into everyday engineering tasks.
  • Help maintain and improve the systems that support source control, monorepo workflows, build orchestration, and CI across multiple cloud environments.

What the team is looking for

  • Deep hands-on experience with build infrastructure, CI/CD, and/or developer tooling in a large monorepo environment.
  • Strong coding ability in Python, Rust, and/or Go.
  • A strong interest in making software development smoother, faster, and less frustrating for other engineers.
  • Experience operating containerized systems and infrastructure at significant scale.
  • Clear communication skills and a collaborative mindset when working with internal teams and partners.
  • Comfort with independent work on ambiguous, high-impact technical problems and foundational platform work.
  • For especially strong candidates, the background often includes roughly 15 or more years of full-time software engineering experience focused on large-scale developer infrastructure, not counting internships or co-ops.
  • For especially strong candidates, the background often includes around 3 or more years leading large, complex efforts or teams in a technical lead role, not counting internships or co-ops.
  • Experience with CI orchestration tools such as Buildkite, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar systems, including merge queue operations at scale.
  • Experience with remote build execution technologies such as Bazel Remote Execution API, BuildBarn, BuildBuddy, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with Nix, NixOS, Docker, and managing large collections of images or packages.
  • Experience creating CLI tools, developer-facing services, and automation around the GitHub API.
  • A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • A relevant academic or professional background in a field connected to the role.
  • The company states that the exact experience level expected will depend on the internal level assigned to the position.
  • Anthropic also encourages people to apply even if they do not match every listed qualification.

Compensation and benefits

  • The annual salary range for this position is £325,000 to £390,000 GBP.
  • Employees may receive optional equity donation matching.
  • The company offers generous vacation time.
  • Parental leave is described as generous.
  • Working hours are flexible.
  • There is a pleasant office space designed to support collaboration with colleagues.
  • The company provides visa sponsorship support and says it will make every reasonable effort to secure a visa if an offer is made, with assistance from an immigration lawyer.

Working arrangement

This is a hybrid role under Anthropic’s location-based policy. Staff are expected to spend at least 25% of their time in one of the company’s offices, and some positions may require a higher in-office commitment.
