Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location London

This is an opportunity for a senior-level mechanical engineer to join a creative and collaborative building engineering team in London, working on technically demanding projects with a strong design focus. The role is aimed at someone who enjoys shaping building services solutions from the earliest stages of a project through to completion, and who wants to contribute to projects that combine architectural ambition, engineering quality, and sustainability.

The position sits within the Building Engineering business in London and involves close collaboration with architects, developers, and multidisciplinary teams on major UK and international work. The project portfolio spans new-build and existing buildings, with work ranging from concept development and detailed design through to construction support, handover, and review after completion. The team’s current focus includes arts and cultural buildings, commercial and mixed-use developments, science and industry projects, heritage and refurbishment work, and low- and zero-carbon buildings. Example work mentioned includes major cultural and commercial schemes such as the British Museum redevelopment, the Hanoi Opera House, the new Museum of London, and large-scale London office projects.

What you will do

  • Take a leading role in the mechanical engineering contribution to projects, helping to shape sustainable outcomes and supporting the development of the building form alongside the architect and wider design team.
  • Develop mechanical design strategies that reflect current best practice in low-energy design, natural ventilation, sustainability, and zero-carbon approaches.
  • Work through the full project lifecycle, including concept development, calculations, modelling, detailed design, tender support, construction-stage input, handover, and post-completion evaluation.
  • Collaborate closely with clients, architects, and other consultants to help realise the best performance from each building.
  • Carry out design analysis and work with colleagues to optimise systems and improve building performance.
  • Design mechanical building services systems, including air conditioning, heating, and both natural and mechanical ventilation solutions.
  • Manage the preparation of models, drawings, reports, and specifications needed to support project delivery.
  • Coordinate design work across multiple disciplines, including internal specialists and engineers from other technical areas.
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of others, including supporting the delivery of work by junior team members or smaller project groups.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients and collaborators, helping to support successful project outcomes.
  • Mentor junior colleagues and contribute to their development while continuing to build your own technical and leadership capability.
  • Play a part in advancing the team’s work on ambitious, architecturally led projects and contribute to the wider culture of collaboration within the London building engineering group.

What the team is looking for

  • Experience in mechanical building services design, together with a strong understanding of how these systems are developed and delivered in practice.
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering, ideally at master’s level.
  • Chartered status, or active progress toward becoming chartered.
  • Confidence in dealing with analytical challenges involving energy consumption, temperature control, and other relevant engineering performance criteria.
  • Preferred experience in thermal modelling work, including assessments linked to Part L and TM54.
  • Ability to oversee the production of building energy models using commonly used tools such as IES, TAS, EnergyPlus, or DesignBuilder.
  • Experience leading design elements and coordinating small engineering teams on projects would be an advantage.
  • Strong technical and design capability, with the ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams on large and complex projects in the UK and internationally.
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to contribute to design-led work with leading architects and developers.
  • Willingness to adapt, learn, and continue developing professionally, including growing into more senior leadership responsibilities over time.

What is offered

  • A competitive and equitable pay package.
  • Profit share as part of the overall reward structure.
  • Private medical insurance.
  • Life assurance.
  • Accident insurance.
  • Income protection cover.
  • Flexible benefits that can be adapted to suit your personal, family, and wellbeing needs.
  • A workplace culture focused on belonging, growth, and long-term development.
  • Access to learning opportunities and the chance to make a meaningful impact through your work.
  • The opportunity to contribute to major projects with strong client and community value.
