Senior Mechanical Engineer Overview

Company Name Arup
Job Role Senior Mechanical Engineer
Qualifications Not Specified
Category IT Jobs
Job Type Full Time
Location London

This is an opportunity for an experienced mechanical engineer to join Arup’s Building Engineering team in London and contribute to technically ambitious, design-led projects. The role is suited to someone who enjoys working in collaborative, multi-disciplinary environments and wants to take responsibility for mechanical design work across the full life cycle of a project, from early concept through to completion and beyond. The team works on a wide range of new-build and existing developments, partnering with leading architects and developers in the UK and internationally.

What the role involves

You will play a central part in shaping the mechanical engineering strategy for projects, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, low-energy design, natural ventilation, and net-zero carbon outcomes. The work is closely connected to architectural and engineering design, so you will be expected to help influence the building form and ensure that mechanical systems support both performance and design quality.

Projects typically move through concept development, calculation and modelling, detailed design, tender support, construction, handover, and post-completion evaluation. You will help clients understand and realise the true performance of their buildings, while also working across disciplines to integrate mechanical systems into the wider design team’s output.

The team’s current focus includes arts and culture, commercial and mixed-use developments, science and industry, heritage and refurbishment, and low- and zero-carbon buildings. The London team is described as collaborative, architecturally focused, and growing, with a positive culture and strong client relationships. Example work mentioned includes major cultural and commercial projects in London and abroad.

Key responsibilities

  • Take a leading role in delivering the mechanical engineering contribution to projects, with responsibility from early design stages through to completion and review.
  • Work closely with architects and other consultants to shape building design in line with sustainability principles, energy strategy, and overall project goals.
  • Develop mechanical system concepts that reflect current thinking on low-energy buildings, natural ventilation, sustainability, and carbon reduction.
  • Design core mechanical building services, including cooling, heating, and ventilation systems that may be natural, mechanical, or a combination of both.
  • Carry out design analysis and collaborate with the wider team to improve system performance and optimise engineering solutions.
  • Produce and manage technical deliverables such as models, drawings, reports, and specifications.
  • Coordinate design work across disciplines and work alongside in-house specialists and external project partners.
  • Oversee and coordinate the work of others, helping to guide project delivery and maintain quality.
  • Support and mentor junior team members while continuing to build your own technical and leadership capability.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with clients and collaborators.

What they are looking for

Arup is seeking someone with a strong grounding in mechanical building services design and the ability to work confidently on complex projects. The ideal candidate will have a degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering, preferably at master’s level, and will either already be chartered or actively working toward chartered status.

You should be comfortable adapting to analytical challenges involving energy consumption, temperature control, and related engineering performance issues. Experience with thermal modelling, including work linked to Part L and TM54, is preferred, along with the ability to oversee building energy modelling using established software such as IES, TAS, EnergyPlus, or DesignBuilder.

Experience leading design tasks and coordinating small engineering teams would be an advantage. The role also calls for someone who enjoys working collaboratively, has strong technical and design capability, and is comfortable taking responsibility on large UK and international projects.
