Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon Overview
| Company Name | Lloyd & Cowan |
| Job Role | Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon |
| Qualifications | Not Specified |
| Category | Healthcare Jobs |
| Job Type | Full Time |
| Location | Leeds |
This is a rare opening for a small animal veterinary surgeon to join a highly regarded and well-supported practice team in West Yorkshire, around 50 minutes to the west of Leeds. The role sits within a practice that is large enough to provide strong clinical support, advanced equipment and a varied caseload, while still keeping a friendly, collaborative atmosphere in everyday work.
You would be part of a nine-vet small animal team with a wide mix of experience and clinical interests. The group includes certificate holders in surgery and imaging, as well as experienced medicine clinicians, supported by a substantial team of qualified RVNs and other support staff. The environment is designed to help people learn from one another, discuss cases openly and keep developing without feeling overwhelmed.
What the role involves
- Providing day-to-day small animal veterinary care within a busy and varied general practice caseload.
- Working as part of a supportive team of nine vets with a broad range of clinical backgrounds and interests.
- Collaborating closely with certificate holders, experienced clinicians, RVNs and support staff to deliver high-quality patient care.
- Building confidence as a well-rounded GP vet while also having room to develop specific areas of interest over time.
- Taking part in the weekend rota, which is set at 1:8.
- Using and benefiting from a modern, purpose-built clinical environment with advanced diagnostic and surgical facilities.
- Contributing to a practice culture that actively supports learning, discussion and professional development.
Practice environment and facilities
The practice is purpose-built and exceptionally well equipped, giving the team access to a strong clinical toolkit. Facilities include a CT scanner, digital x-ray, ultrasound, an in-house laboratory, dedicated surgical suites, separate inpatient accommodation and 24/7 onsite nursing cover. This setup supports a wide range of cases and helps the team manage patients effectively.
Out-of-hours work is handled externally, which allows the in-house team to step away properly and enjoy a healthier balance between work and personal life. The caseload is described as busy and varied, making this a strong fit for someone who wants to keep growing clinically in a general practice setting.
Location and lifestyle
The practice is based in Keighley, offering access to the Yorkshire countryside and the Dales while also being well connected to Leeds and Manchester. That means the role combines rural surroundings with access to city amenities such as restaurants, shopping and nightlife. The area is also noted as being more affordable than many larger cities, helping day-to-day living costs go further.
What is on offer
- A permanent position with a salary from £40,000 to £65,000 depending on experience.
- A four-day working week.
- An excellent 1:8 weekend rota.
- Eight weeks of annual leave, bank holidays included.
- Strong CPD support and funding.
- Encouragement and support for certificate study.
- Payment of professional fees.
- Visa sponsorship.
Who this role suits
This opportunity is aimed at an established small animal vet who wants to join a genuinely supportive team, work with advanced facilities and continue developing clinically while maintaining a good work-life balance. It is not suitable for new graduates, and the practice would ideally like applicants to have a minimum of two years of UK experience.
